If you thought the ending of Yellowstone was the last we’d see of the Dutton family on TV, you’ve not been paying attention to the myriad spin-offs, prequels, and sidequels that have turned Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western soap into one of television’s most expansive universes.
Aside from the handful of directly related shows, there are several others set in the same shared universe, the latest of which is Dutton Ranch, a direct sequel to the original series. Reprising her role (and taking over from Kevin Costner as franchise lead), Kelly Reilly plays Beth Dutton: fratricidal financier, manipulator, and matriarch, as she starts a new life on a ranch in South Texas. And girl, you know there’s gonna be drama. In that spirit, here are 10 other westerns (in original and neo-western flavors) in which women are running the ranch.
Godless (2017)
An underrated western gem from the Netflix back catalog, this one comes from writer/director Scott Frank, more recently of The Queen’s Gambit and Dept. Q. Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) stars as Alice Fletcher, a woman running a small ranch by herself. She’s a widow, but not the only one—a mining accident has killed nearly all the men in the small town of La Belle, New Mexico. Hell is coming their way in the form of Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), a brutal gang leader on the run and leaving a trail of bodies leading right to Alice’s door. The show made a number of top ten lists the year it was released but ended after one season, and deserves a look if you missed it back then. Stream Godless on Netflix.
Territory (2024)
The spirit of the American West lives on in the Northern Territory of Australia, where the Lawson family has run the world’s largest cattle station (apparently the size of Belgium) for generations. With hints of Succession, this beautifully photographed show becomes a twisty-turny fight for the survival of this family dynasty: butch patriarch Colin (Robert Taylor) passed the family business along to his younger son, Dan, who’s…eaten by dingoes in the opening episode (I shit you not). Older, skipped-over son Graham (Michael Dorman) is suddenly in the spotlight as other families, criminals, and Aboriginal leaders all make plays for the land. At the center of these overlapping storms is Graham’s wife, Emily (Anna Torv), the child of a rival clan and a big part of the reason that Graham never got a shot at the prize. Stream Territory on Netflix.
The Madison (2026 – )
A testament to the power of its creator and the inspired casting of Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead, The Madison was renewed for second and third seasons before it even premiered. Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of a rich New York family who decides to pick up stakes following a tragedy, reconnecting with what she’s lost by visiting her late husband’s isolated tract of land in Montana for a break from the show’s horror-movie vision of NYC. In the process, she learns lessons about love, grief, and fishing in the folksy great outdoors. Stream The Madison on Paramount+.
The Abandons (2025)
In the best tradition of Johnny Guitar (in which old west magnate and barkeep Joan Crawford faces off against vengeful rancher Mercedes McCambridge), The Abandons finds two indefatigable women duking it out in 1850 Washington. Lena Headey is Fiona Nolan, a devout single mother raising four orphans and struggling to survive, a situation not at all helped by greedy silver mine owner Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson), who wants Fiona’s farm and isn’t going to take no for an answer. There’s nothing new here in terms of the show’s western trappings, but who cares? Watching Lena Headey face down Gillian Anderson is more than enough reason to watch. Stream The Abandons on Netflix.
1883 (2021 – 2022)
The Yellowstone universe is increasingly sprawling, with a timeline complex enough to rival Star Wars. The first of the spin-offs, 1883 is also set earliest in the timeline, giving us a bit of Dutton family prehistory. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill play the first generation of the family to make the trip from Texas to Montana on a dangerous wagon train led by Sam Elliott. Isabel May’s 17-year-old Elsa Dutton is at the heart of the story, starting as an adventurous young woman, before becoming hardened by her experiences. Sitting at the far opposite end of the chronology, the show effectively bookends Dutton Ranch. Stream 1883 on Paramount+.
The English (2022)
It’s the waning days of the American Old West (around 1890), and Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt) has left England with vengeance in mind: She’s come to kill the man responsible for the death of her son. In Kansas, she encounters Mr. Watts (a chilling Ciarán Hinds), who’s been instructed to stop her, but who’s also in the process of torturing Eli Whipp, a Pawnee native and former U.S. Army scout. Eli is traveling to Nebraska to collect the land he’s owed for his service, even though he knows that white men are unlikely to honor the debt. With something like common cause, Lady Cornelia and Eli escape and set out together, their fates becoming increasingly intertwined as the two build an unshakeable bond through their travels. Stream The English on Prime Video.
Heartland (2007 – )
Based on a popular book series from Linda Chapman and Beth Chambers (who write under the pseudonym Lauren Brooke), this series follows the lives of a family of horse ranchers in western Canada led by sisters Amy and Lou (Amber Marshall and Michelle Morgan). This is more family drama than Dutton, with the stakes a bit closer to home, but it’s very much got that western feel—even if we’re talking about western Alberta. If you’re new to the show, there’s a lot to catch up on: It’s coming up on its 20th season. Stream Heartland on Netflix.
Ransom Canyon (2025 – )
Another neo-western that goes a little heavier on the personal drama, Ransom Canyon takes us to the center of a land dispute involving multiple overlapping family dynasties. Widowed Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) is trying to hold on to his family’s land while pursuing a course of vengeance against the man he blames for the death of his son. Into this drama steps Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly): family friend, dancehall owner, concert pianist—and very possibly the only person who can help Staten get his shit together. Stream Ransom Canyon on Netflix.
Dark Winds (2022 – )
Adapted from a series of books by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds takes us back to the 1970s and the Four Corners region of the American Southwest (where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet). Jessica Matten, Zahn McClarnon, and Kiowa Gordon lead the largely Indigenous American cast as three Navajo Tribal Police officers brought together when a bank robbery on the border of the Navajo Nation becomes entangled with the deaths of two Native residents. A blend of hardboiled crime show and police procedural, this one stands out for its exploration of the fraught history and relationships between these neighboring, interwoven communities. Stream Dark Winds on Netflix.
1923 (2022 – 2025)
Finally, a return to the Dutton family of the 1920s, this one starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, the two legends certainly representing a major casting coup (especially when you throw in Timothy Dalton as the baddie). In this mid-quel, set between the Yellowstone/Dutton Ranch era and the more western-themed 1883, the Duttons take on Prohibition, with the Great Depression looming in the background. Mirren is the strong-willed matriarch Cara Dutton, while Isabel May returns from 1883 to narrate the series as Elsa Dutton. Stream 1923 on Paramount+.
