Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story anthology series on FX became a fan favorite show in 2011, thanks to its over-the-top storylines, campy delivery, and meme-worthy moments. But once the series lost Oscar-winner Jessica Lange after the fourth season in 2014, subtitled Freak Show, the series slowly started losing steam. The last few seasons didn’t really enter the pop culture zeitgeist. But according to Deadline, for its upcoming 13th season, Murphy is pulling out all the stops. He’s bringing back series icon Jessica Lange, along with several notable actors from the show’s past, and even singer/Wicked star, Ariana Grande.
Ryan Murphy revealed the cast for the new season via an Instagram post on Halloween. The video lists off several names from American Horror Story’s regular stable of actors, with Jessica Lange’s name coming last. This addition was a huge surprise, because earlier this year, Lange was asked about a return to the series. She said, “Christ, no. I mean, I haven’t done it for more than 10 years, 12 years. So, no, I’m not doing it.” This is some Andrew Garfield/Spider-Man: No Way Home levels of denial. After Lange’s name came up, a quote from AHS: Coven popped up on screen, saying “Surprise, bitch. I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.” The rest of the cast includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, and Leslie Grossman.
Could this season be another continuation of AHS: Coven? That season focused on a coven of witches based out of New Orleans. It remains a fan-favorite season, especially for LGBTQ fans. Although each season is usually a standalone story, 2018’s American Horror Story: Apocalypse brought the witches back from Coven. This meant resurrecting many dead characters. Most of the main Coven cast is back for season 13, so maybe this is Coven: Part 3? All we need is Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, and Francis Conroy back, and it’s a complete set. We’ll have to wait and see what the premise and subtitle of season 13 is. But we imagine we’ll find out soon. If season 13 is indeed the final season, let’s hope they go out with a bang.
