WICKED: FOR GOOD’S New Original Songs Share First Previews Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

One of the most anticipated films of the year (maybe the decade?) has to be Wicked: For Good. The first film only adapted the Broadway musical’s first act, ending with Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) embracing her rebel status in Oz, and singing “Defying Gravity.” Jon M. Chu’s upcoming Wicked: For Good now covers the second act. But Act II is significantly shorter than Act I. The first act has eleven songs, and the second has eight. So the producers of Wicked: For Good have added two new Wicked songs, both from original composer Stephen Schwartz. And Universal has released brief snippets of both.

The first new Wicked: For Good song previewed is an Elphaba number, called “No Place Like Home.” This is, of course, a direct callback to Judy Garland and the original 1939 Wizard of Oz. You can check out a brief preview of the new song below:

The second new, original Wicked song is a solo number for Ariana Grande as Glinda. It’s called “The Girl in the Bubble,” and it’s a beautiful tune that showcases how the so-called “Good Witch” of Oz rules a kingdom built on lies. You can take a listen to the preview right here:

Although Wicked is technically a prequel to the L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it contains just as many references to the classic MGM film. Elphaba’s green skin, Glinda’s magic bubble, and now the phrase “There’s no place like home,” are all from the iconic movie. But one reference from the 1939 film they couldn’t use was the ruby slippers. That’s an original invention, and Warner Bros. owns the trademark on it still. So they used the silver shoes from the book instead.

As part of the promotional juggernaut for Wicked: For Good, NBC aired a special concert called Wicked: One Wonderful Night, which featured Cynthia Erivo belting out “Defying Gravity” as she literally defied gravity over the audience. Somehow, this showstopper song is now even more showstopper-y. Does everyone overplay this song now? Yes. Does it still give us goosebumps? Also, yes.

Wicked: For Good hits theaters everywhere on November 21. We can’t wait to hear all of Wicked‘s new original songs and we hope they are just as good as the hits we know and love.
