An unusual household appliance has been launched on the market in Japan: a washing machine for people. The 7.5-feet-long capsule (that’s 2.30 meters) was unveiled at the World Expo [PDF], which took place in Osaka from April to October this year. The so-called “Human Washing Machine” is designed to clean one’s body in around 15 minutes.
How the Human Washing Machine works
The Human Washing Machine was developed by Osaka-based company Science and looks like a cross between a bathtub and a car wash. The capsule has a recliner-like seat for the user to sit on during the 15-minute washing process.
Microbubbles and fine water vapor are distributed evenly over the body, while built-in sensors monitor vital signs to ensure safety. Soothing music and visual effects are played at the same time. At the end of the cycle, users are automatically dried—there is no need for a spin cycle as with conventional washing machines for clothes.
According to company spokeswoman Sachiko Maekura, the new machine not only cleans the body but also “washes the soul” by using sensors to monitor the user’s heartbeat and vital functions throughout the entire process.
The concept for the Human Washing Machine goes back all the way to the 1970 Expo in Osaka. At that time, the company showed a similar device, but it didn’t go into series production. According to NDTV, the current design is said to have been inspired by the President of Science, who had seen the original machine as a child.
Exclusivity and a high price
The Human Washing Machine isn’t intended for mass market retail. According to the Japan Times, the price is around 60 million yen (or about the equivalent of $385,000 USD).
Due to its complexity and novelty, only 50 units are initially being produced. One of the first devices has already been sold to a hotel in Osaka, which intends to make it available to guests. Electronics retailer Yamada Holdings has also announced that it will be exhibiting a demo device in its flagship shop in Ikebukuro from December 25th, including a test area for visitors.
There was great interest at Expo 2025, with over 40,000 requests for use. Whether the machine can prevail against conventional showers in everyday life remains questionable. For most households, price and size are likely to be deal-breakers.
