We always knew that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was going to be an epic undertaking. It is based on a literal epic, after all. But that was going to be doubly true of his follow up to Oppenheimer. Universal announced Nolan would film it entirely with IMAX cameras, the first movie ever shot that way. Yet somehow we underestimated just how massive this endeavor was actually going to be. Nolan says he used more than two million feet of film to shoot The Odyssey. And he shot a lot of that without any ground beneath his feet.
Nolan spoke to Empire about making his big budget adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem. The film finally let him bring to life a world he has thought about for decades. Nolan was originally tapped to direct 2024′ Troy, but Wolfgang Petersen ultimately ended up with the job. Nolan more than made up for lost time with his newest movie, which required a shooting for 91 days. That’s 91 days and an epic amount of film. “We shot over two million feet of film,” said Nolan.
That. Is. A. Lot. What makes that total even more impressive is that a lot of the production took place at sea. Nolan called being out on the water “pretty primal!” But he said that while it was a big undertaking filming out on the ocean, it was important for the movie. “We really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people,” he said. “And the leap of faith that was being made in an unmapped, uncharted world.”
An unmapped, unchartered world now captured on more than two million feet of film. A lot of film doesn’t guarantee anything, of course. But if Nolan’s The Odyssey ends matching the scope of what it took to made, it will truly be epic.
