We applaud stars who put their money where their mouth is. Or, in this case, their mouth where their money is. Oscar Isaac once famously said that he’d only return to Star Wars if he needed another house. And we suppose that was a real statement to make. But now, Oscar Isaac has the door open to returning to Star Wars, but has a new caveat which we can all get behind. In a new interview with GQ, Isaac shared that he’d consider a Star Wars return IF Disney did not “succumb to fascism.” Well, considering Star Wars is all about not succumbing to fascism, we certainly hope a future where a) Disney does not succumb to fascism and b) Oscar Isaac returns to Star Wars can be achieved. We can honestly say, that sounds like a light side vision of the world to us.
In full, here’s what Oscar Isaac had to say about returning to Star Wars, Disney, and fascism. He noted to GQ, “I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great… If that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things.”
GQ provides context on Oscar Isaac’s sentiments toward Star Wars and Disney, giving us a clearer understanding of where the comments came from. The publication notes, “This interview was conducted two days after ABC and Disney suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in response to comments Kimmel made following the death of Charlie Kirk. Kimmel was back on the air four days after this conversation took place.” Indeed, the decision made to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! felt like an unprecedented one, and one that certainly shook the foundations of free speech on which this country has been built. Disney/ABC did quickly reversed course on the brief Kimmel cancellation. However, that it happened at all does make Isaac’s comments on fascism feel relevant.
Ultimately, we’re glad Oscar Isaac isn’t ruling out a Star Wars return… And we’re glad he is willing to speak out against fascism.
