The Sonic the Hedgehog big screen franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Via The Hollywood Reporter we’ve learned that, in approximately two years, a fourth Sonic movie will speed into theaters on December 22, 2027. This is a delay from its March 19, 2027 original release date. This should come as no surprise, as the last film in the franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, made nearly $500 million worldwide on a $122 million budget. In the post-pandemic era, the cinematic adventures of the iconic Sega video game character have become one of Paramount Pictures’ most reliable moneymakers. We fully expect Ben Schwartz to return as the voice of our titular hero.
Will Sonic the Hedgehog 4 keep that particular release date? Right now, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, which brings an end to the Multiverse Saga, will release just days before, on December 17. But a fourth Sonic might be excellent counter-programming. Especially as it’s largely aimed at families. The first Sonic was met with controversy before it ever came out. This was mainly because the fandom greeted the original design with much derision. But by the time the film released, Paramount had changed the design to something more familiar. The first film became a surprise hit, coming out right before the pandemic hit in 2020.
So, who can expect to return for the fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film? We fully expect to see Jim Carrey come back as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Sonic’s arch nemesis. Sonic signaled a career resurgence for Carrey, and he’s the franchise’s biggest name when it comes to its live-action cast. So we can’t imagine he’s sitting this one out. We also expect the return of James Marsden as Sonic’s adoptive father, Tom Wachowski. And possibly, maybe even Keanu Reeves will return as Shadow the Hedgehog. We expect more casting news for the fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film in the months to come.
