Horror isn’t confined to one season, but Halloween is the perfect time to bust out some terrifying horror-themed board games. Much like the horror movie genre, horror board games have steadily grown in popularity over the past few years. After all, the thrill of running for your life translates surprisingly well to board game mechanics, as does gory mystery solving and trying to stop a monstrous calamity from befalling a sleepy hamlet. If you’re looking to jump into a horror board game this season, be sure to give some of these a try as Halloween approaches.
Dead By Daylight: The Board Game

A board game take on the popular horror video game franchise, Dead By Daylight: The Board Game tasks a group of survivors with finding and repairing generators that power their escape route while trying to outrun a demented killer. Each round, players move to a different room, reveal a token (which represent supplies, hiding places, or the generators themselves), and then wait for the killer to make a move. If the killer catches a would-be survivor, they are bloodied and then placed on a hook. This generates resources that the killer can spend to activate abilities and switch their routes on the fly. This is an easy and quick game that can be enjoyed by both Dead by Daylight fans and newcomers to the franchise.
Final Girl
Final Girl is a loving homage to the horror genre, while also being one of the best solo board games available today. Players take on the role of the Final Girl, who is trying to save other Victims and face off against a Killer (many of which are takes on popular horror franchises.) Each round, players have a limited amount of Time (a resource in the game – this isn’t a timed game) that’s spent on different Actions. The Final Girl gains abilities by saving Victims, while the Killer gains Bloodlust whenever it kills a Victim or attacks the Final Girl.
The game contains plenty of expansions that adds new Final Girls or new Killers to the fray, allowing for a modular play experience. Final Girl doesn’t pull any punches. You’ll lose in heartbreaking fashion and will often resort to longshot tactics to try to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. However, winning Final Girl feels like an accomplishment and it’ll keep you captivated from start to finish.
Spooktacular

This new Level 99 game is all about horror movies that come to life to eat terrified moviegoers. In the game, players choose one of 20 asymmetric movies, each with their own unique mechanics and ways of scoring points. These movies stalk across the theatre, scoring points when they scare moviegoers from room to room or consume a set of differently colored moviegoer meeples.
The game lovingly spoofs dozens of B-horror movies, and the variety of movie choices makes this game infinitely replayable. Spooktacular is a fun and quick-moving game, where half of the fun is learning how your chosen monster works.
Cthulhu: Death May Die
A fast and furious dice-chucker in which players gain more abilities as they’re driven to madness, Cthulhu: Death May Die is a fun take on the Lovecraftian horror franchise. In the game, players work together to complete a chapter’s mission and draw out a Great Old One (several are available to choose from, each with their own unique mechanics) to the Material Plane. The chosen cosmic horror wreaks havoc on the players each round, gradually growing in power throughout the game.
One interesting twist in the game is that madness (a common theme in Lovecraftian horror games) isn’t treated as wholly negative. In fact, players add more dice and abilities to their dice pool as their madness creeps up. This is one of my favorite horror games. And I’m always struck by how the game often comes down to the final round of play.
Horrified

The Horrified franchise is a cooperative game that requires players to fight against monsters pulled out of various myths, legends, or popular franchises. Each game features a different set of themed monsters that terrorize a town or region. (The original uses Universal Monsters, there’s a Greek myth version, and most recently a D&D variant.) Each monster has its own unique defeat condition, which usually involves collecting different items and delivering them to specific locations on the board.
Complicating matters are bystanders that can be attacked and instantly defeated by monsters. Players need to balance ushering these bystanders to their destination with collecting the items they need to secure a victory. This is an easy and relatively quick game that requires careful board management to avoid a quick defeat.
Zombicide
There are several zombie board games available, but Zombicide stands out for its quick pace of play and its infinite supply of zombies always ready to muck things up for players. Players work together in a zombie apocalypse to complete a mission, shooting and chain-sawing their way through hordes of zombies as they do.
Although killing zombies round after round can be fun, the hordes are endless and stronger zombies will periodically appear that can be a real bear to defeat. This game is all about balancing clearing a path through an endless horde and actually accomplishing your goals.
The Night Cage

Crawling through the mud with a single candle as your light, can you solve a deadly maze and escape before the light-seeking creatures that lurk within track you down? The Night Cage is a tile-laying game in which players work against the clock (or an ever shrinking stack of tiles, in this case) in order to find keys and escape through a gate. On any given turn, players can only see the tiles immediately surrounding them, so players have to be to react quickly, as tiles will quickly be removed from the board once a player moves away from them.
Revealed monsters will snuff out players’ candles, which means they can only see the tile they’re actually on. Once tiles run out, players make one final last race towards the nearest gate, or they’ll be trapped in darkness forever. The Night Cage is a creepy and tense game, one with endless replay possibility if your table can handle it.
