The time has finally come for Darth Maul to take center stage in a show of his very own. At Star Wars Celebration 2025, Lucasfilm announced its next Disney+ series would be an animated offering all about Darth Maul and his nefarious underworld adventures. The series will be called Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord and will star long-time Darth Maul voice actor Sam Witwer.
What Will Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the Darth Maul Series, Be About?
Darth Maul is a dark-side figure who has truly won fans’ hearts. Darth Maul appeared in the live-action Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Solo: A Star Wars Story. But Darth Maul truly made his mark in the successful Star Wars animated series from George Lucas and Dave Filoni, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. And so it makes sense that Darth Maul is heading back to animation in his next chapter.
Lucasfilm shares, “In a new series set after the events of the final season of The Clone Wars, Maul rises again to lead the underworld factions.” Additionally, the official Star Wars site notes of the Darth Maul series, “After the Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.” Sounds like a fun adventure.
Witwer additionally shared at the panel, that the series takes place “about a year” after the Clone Wars, and that Darth Maul is “dusting himself off a bit” after Ahsoka “kicked him to the curb.”
Witwer adds, “We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”
Who Will Star in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord? And Who Will Write and Direct It?
So far, we know that Sam Witwer will return to star in the Star Wars Disney+ Darth Maul series. Witwer voiced Darth Maul previously. He “first portrayed Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, later reprising the role in Star Wars Rebels.” He also voiced Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
As to who will create Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, while a Darth Maul animated series seems to be exactly in Dave Filoni’s wheelhouse, there’s no confirmation he will have any involvement with the series. As of right now, we don’t know who will work behind the scenes of the Darth Maul show.
When Will the Darth Maul Disney+ Series Release?
Lucasfilm has revealed that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will debut on Disney+ in 2026.
