Meta video creation app Instagram Edits has recorded more than 7 million downloads in the first week after it launched. The feat means that the newly released video creation app had a better debut than its direct rival, ByteDance’s Capcut during the same period.
The new application helps users create videos for Instagram reels, stories, and other social media posts. Meta announced the launch of the application on April 22, releasing it to its global audience. The application, according to the company, will allow its users to keep track of video ideas, get inspiration for new content, and create videos with effects and AI. The announcement also said that the app was available to both iOS and Android devices.
According to reports, the application already recorded an estimated 702,900 downloads on iOS devices two days after it was launched. According to app intelligence provider Appfigures, the figure was 37 times more than the number of downloads registered by CapCut on iOS devices two days after it entered the market.
Meta’s Instagram Edits records milestone downloads
According to reports, the application has now grown to 1.2 million downloads on iOS and 5.9 million downloads on Android, making it a total of about 7.1 million downloads. By comparison, CapCut only saw about 83.5K downloads across iOS and Android in its first three days after launch. One of the reasons for the low number was tied to its limited launch, with the application only launched in some markets. But even if the numbers were tripled, it would still not reach Edits’ figures.
In the United States, Edits saw 381K downloads in its first three days, with CapCut managing to pull just 3,400 downloads in the same time frame when it debuted in the country. This comparison shows that Edits’ launch was 112x the size of CapCut’s.
According to Appfigures, the fast adoption of Edits has also led the application to record a high ranking during its debut, with the data provider noting that the development could boost its downloads and increase competition.
The numbers also show how powerful Meta’s network is when it comes to launching new applications that can be used across its wider social networking ecosystem. The new application did not waste time in hitting No. 1 on the United States iPhone App Store’s chart. It achieved the milestone on its first day, April 22, topping the Top Overall Apps and Top Apps (minus games) charts. On the second day, it dropped to number 2 on the charts, and remained there before dropping to number 3 by Friday.
Creators share mixed reaction over Edits’ launch
While the application has achieved this impressive feat, it still has a long way to go. For starters, it needs to accumulate a bigger user base, as it will help its quest to catch up with CapCut. The ByteDance-owned app, which is popular among creators on TikTok, which was also created by the same company, launched in April 2020. Since then, it has been downloaded more than a billion times worldwide, excluding users in China.
According to a recent newsletter from social media marketing consultant, Lia Haberman, Edits has received mixed reactions from creators. Most users praised the application’s ease of use, built-in analytics, and free nature, support for 4K video, and watermark-free exports. “One cool feature is it automatically saves progress as you edit, so you don’t lose your work if the app crashes or you forgot to hit save,” a user said.
Meanwhile, critics have pointed out that Edits still lacked features provided by CapCut, including things like templates and some other effects.
