Nearly three years after her MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri “Ironheart” Williams’ story continues in her own Disney+ series. Ironheart takes the teenage genius (played by Dominique Thorne) back to her hometown of Chicago, where she will find herself entangled with The Hood (Anthony Ramos). What happens when someone who wants to be a hero finds themselves on the dark side to make their dreams come true? Those answers lie within the six episodes of Ironheart and will set up Riri’s future in the MCU.
Unlike longtime comic mainstays like Captain America, Riri Williams, created by Brian Michael Bendis, comic book reading list is much more manageable. In fact, if you had a chill day or two to yourself, you could easily get through her main comic stories as well as a taste of her other appearances in print. So, let’s dive into the essential comics reading list for Ironheart so you can compare it to Riri’s MCU journey.
Invincible Iron Man Vol. 3 #7-12 (2015-2016)
In 2015, Riri made her debut in Invincible Iron Man Vol. 3’s seventh issue. However, it is a very brief appearance showing two MIT students knocking on her door and telling her to quiet down. We see Riri building something that looks like War Machine Armor.
Two issues later, the comic reveals she’s a teenager who is building a suit of armor using materials stolen from campus. Riri is a bit wayward, skipping class and making too much noise. It’s not that in-depth of an appearance that you have to read it, but if you’re someone who must read all the things, start here.
Riri’s story really takes shape in the following issues when she ends up on the radar of Tony Stark. She inadvertently becomes a hero during some test runs of her prototype suit, which ruins all her hard work. However, as she regroups in Chicago, Stark visits her and gives her his stamp of approval.
Civil War II #6-8 (2016)
Riri uses her repaired armor to fight in the second Civil War against Captain Marvel’s forces. This epic event leads to Tony Stark’s coma and Riri deciding to use an AI guide of his likeness as she becomes Ironheart.
Invincible Iron Man Vol. 4 #1-11 (2016-2017)
Ironheart continues to build her profile in these issues as she steps into Tony Stark’s (very heavy) shoes. It’s far too much to get into here (you should go check it out!) but it gives her character a firmer foundation and establishes her importance in the Marvel Comics universe.
Ironheart (2018)
This series is Riri’s first solo comic book series and it sets her story on a different path. If you don’t want to get into the shenanigans of the above series, which have more twists and turns than you’d imagine, you could start with Ironheart. You won’t really have to do any extra homework for this series. Eve Ewing brings something to the table as a Black woman writer that invigorates Riri Williams as a character.
Her determination, heartbreak, and fight to make her mark on the world is a thrilling journey to explore. There’s only 12 issues total and the team-ups are out of this world, from Miles Morales to the Dora Milaje. Personally, this is the series that made me really fall in love with Ironheart and, if you ignore the rest of this comics list, you will probably fall for Riri too.
Champions #1-10 (2019)
Following the Civil War events and Riri’s own rise to fame, she teams up with a band of young leaders called the Champions. This collective, led by Ms. Marvel, is powerful yet they often lean towards their humanity and heart when it comes to solving issues.
2020 Ironheart #1 (2020)
This single issue is an excellent story by Danny Lore and Vita Ayala where Riri and her AI N.A.T.A.L.I.E. face a robot revolution. Can they weather this latest challenge? You have to read to find out.
Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1 (2025)
Riri hasn’t had a ton of comic motion over the last few years but this is yet another one-shot story that’s worth exploring before diving into Ironheart. She has to go up against a familiar nemesis and defend the place that means the most to her: Chicago.
Of course, there are other Ironheart comics appearances that you can explore, but the list above will have you armed (ha!) and ready as you get into Ironheart. The series hits Disney+ on June 24 with its first three episodes.
