The Walking Dead: Dead City season two is over and there’s still a lot happening in NYC. The season took Maggie and Negan through their own emotional journeys as they faced their decisions and fought against several forces. There were indeed some deaths in the mix, including that vibey forest group who didn’t deserve their fate, and a lot of annoying behavior by Hershel and Ginny. But what ultimately happens to Maggie and Negan in The Walking Dead: Dead City? Here’s how the story ends for them. 

Maggie Is Alive and At Odds With Her Son 

Any feeble strands of connection that Maggie had with Herschel are now gone. He is fully indoctrinated into Dama’s vision of a new world and, as we saw in the previous episode, betrayed his own mother to allow her capture. Maggie knows that a lot of Herschel’s dislike and distrust of her comes from her decades-long obsession with Negan, but this is especially hurtful for her.

In the finale, she tells Herschel (as Dama watches nearby) that she will finally go and kill Negan. And, for a moment, it looks like she’s going to do just that after she hits him with a sneak attack and stabs him. She even picks up Lucille 2.0 and raises it to bash his brains in. But, once again, Maggie changes her mind after seeing Negan’s pain (and feeling her own) over Ginny’s death. (I know.) 

Maggie Spares Negan’s Life and They Prepare to Face New Babylon

When she returns, Herschel knows that she didn’t do it. Despite Maggie telling him that killing Negan won’t truly solve anything nor make the world better, he’s done with her and basically Dama’s kid now. Maggie promises him that she will stay in the city, which is now essentially under the jurisdiction of New Babylon Federation following the deadly battle between Bruegel and Negan. Maggie holes up with Negan and Armstrong as they try to figure out what their next moves will be as season two of Dead City ends. 

Will The Walking Dead: Dead City Return for Season 3?

It’s certainly not impossible. It seems that Maggie and Negan want to find a resolution and will have to work together to save Herschel. That is, if Herschel ever wants to be saved. The idea of a Walking Dead universe crossover is still nebulous at this point. But the franchise’s supreme leader Scott Gimple did previously say that he wanted Daryl, Rick, Maggie, Negan and Michonne together again. Maybe the resolution for this story lies in that event instead of a third season. We shall see.
