I stash a solar charge power bank on my windowsill and forget about it until my power goes out, and then I can use it as both a flashlight and a phone charger. If you’ve ever been out and about and suddenly realized that your phone is at 3% and you’re far from an outlet, or you have suffered through a power outage without a way to charge your phone, a solar charge power bank is a good solution, and this one is 52% off for Prime Day.
This is a single solar-powered 5-volt, 42800 mili-amp-hour battery bank that you can use to charge a phone or other device through its two USB/C charging ports. It also functions as an LED flashlight in case the power goes out, and it’s water-proof and chemical resistant for durability. This mini power bank can take a charge about 1,600 times before the battery wears out, and it has magnetic field resistance built in to protect it from damage so it’s a dependable choice for back-up charging, camping, or your emergency roadside kit. This device doesn’t come with cables, so you’ll need a device-compatible cable to use it for charging.
Why solar charging is a good choice
If you’re using a solar charged battery bank in case of a power outage, solar charging allows you to use devices even if there’s no electricity. If you use other types of backup power, like a gas or propane-fueled generator, a solar powered back-up can be a good addition to your kit because in an emergency, there’s the potential that gas and propane will be scarce. Diversifying the type of power generation you use can make your emergency kit more resilient. The added bonus of solar charging is that sunlight is free, and you can get it any time the sun is out.
Why this battery bank is a favorite
This battery bank is a favorite of mine because you can put it on a sunny windowsill and basically forget about it until you need it. It takes awhile to charge, but that’s okay if you leave it for an extended period. If you don’t have a full charge, and you think you might need it, it also has a wall-charging function, allowing you to plug it in and charge it up more quickly.
The light weight and durability of this power bank lets you toss it in your glove box or bag and keep it with you for outdoor activities or a roadside emergency kit. Because it’s drop-resistant and waterproof, it’s good to take to the beach as a just-in-case backup or in a go-bag for an emergency kit.
I’ve used the flashlight feature more than I expected to because in a power outage, I always know my solar power bank is on my windowsill. When I grab it in the dark, I use it to see my way while I get the rest of my back-up supplies together. You can also use the flashlight function to make yourself more visible in case you need to get out of your vehicle on the roadside. Because the light is an LED, it doesn’t run out the battery as quick as you might expect, although I wouldn’t try to use it for a flashlight and a charger at the same time for more than a few minutes.
