Episode six of Peacemaker‘s second season featured a major DCU cameo. If you haven’t seen it yet and want to avoid spoilers, use the Quantum Unfolding Chamber to visit a horrible universe where Nerdist doesn’t exist. Or, you know, just watch the episode and then come back to learn why it’s so important.

Despite it’s box office success, James Gunn brought Superman to digital shortly after it arrived in theaters. He said he wanted fans to see it ahead of Peacemaker‘s second season. Now we know why. Gunn has also said the show will lead “directly” into Clark Kent’s big screen sequel, Man of Tomorrow, and he just directly tied all three DCU stories with one surprise cameo. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor made an unexpected appearance in season two’s sixth episode. The United States government needed his help. Now they’re officially in business with a supervillain who wants the public to love him.
A desperate Rick Flagg, Sr. had no way of finding the missing Christopher Smith. More importantly, he had no way of finding Peacemaker’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a device Flagg needed to locate to keep both the United States and the world safe. He had just seen in Superman what can happen when someone starts messing around with parallel planes. A giant multidimensional rift tore Metropolis in half, and it would have tore the whole world apart had Superman not saved the day.
With Harcourt and Economos also in the wind, Flagg was out of options. If he was going to locate Smith’s multidimensional portal he needed the help of a man who knows more about them than anyone. The General needed help from the man who created the rift that has Flagg so worried about another one. Flagg needed Lex Luthor.

The head of A.R.G.U.S. met with the recently imprisoned Luthor at Belle Reve in St. Roch, Louisiana. Luthor wasn’t interested in negotiating with Flagg. He just wanted to hear the best offer Flagg was willing to make. While Luthor expected to easily outsmart Flagg, the General knew who he was dealing with. He wasn’t going to give Luthor his freedom, but he could give something Luthor craves even more. He offered Luthor, who the world sees as a monster who almost destroyed it, “an opportunity for redemption.” That’s something the super genius desperate for public affection craves.
Luthor—who had already hinted at owning a scanner “that could pinpoint the location of that portal”—did more than listen. When Flagg left he said Luthor had given him what he wanted in exchange for a transfer to the non-metahuman Van Kull Maximum Security Prison. (Which is notably located in Metropolis in DC Comics.) Sasha Bordeaux couldn’t believe that was all Luthor got in the exchange, and she was right. Flagg, Sr. told there was not much more, “other than now we’re partners with Lex Luthor.”

The United States government offered the disgraced Lex Luthor the chance to improve his public image. He just needs to help with an existential threat posed by a rogue, known-killer vigilante most of the public thinks is a clown. Flagg also moved Luthor from the most fortified and dangerous prison in Louisiana to the slightly less fortified and dangerous prison in Superman’s backyard, the very city Luthor almost destroyed. It’s also the place where Gunn has already confirmed Superman and Luthor will team up against in Man of Tomorrow. The sequel will feature the two iconic enemies working together. They might need to save Metropolis, the United States, and the entire world.
Lex Luthor appearing on an HBO Max show has already made the burgeoining DCU feel intimately connected. The events of Superman have had a huge impact on Peacemaker‘s second season and the show will have a huge impact on Man of Tomorrow. It also made America’s most trusted defender an ally of its least trustworthy genius. Rick Flagg Sr. owes Lex Luthor, and that’s not an ideal situation for him or A.R.G.U.S. No one wants to be in debt to him.
But while Luthor’s surprise appearance revealed a lot about the future of the DCU and how he’ll end up working with the metahuman he hates most, the fun isn’t over. There are still two episodes left in Peacemaker‘s second season. Superman’s greatest enemy might not be the last major cameo we get this year.
