Ethereum’s PeerDAS Seen as L2 Game-Changer Lawrence Mike Woriji | usagoldmines.com

Ethereum is preparing for one of its most important upgrades of the year. The Fusaka upgrade, set for December, will introduce PeerDAS, a new way for nodes to check data availability without downloading the full blockchain. Vitalik Buterin believes this feature will be the key to scaling Ethereum’s layer 2 ecosystem.

Instead of forcing nodes to download everything, PeerDAS lets them sample small chunks of data. By checking these pieces, nodes can be confident that the full dataset exists across the network. This approach reduces the burden on individual participants while keeping security intact.

Tackling Ethereum’s Bottleneck

Ethereum’s rollups have long been held back by limited data availability. PeerDAS was first outlined in January under EIP-7594 to solve this issue. The change will allow more blob data to flow through the system, boosting scale for rollups and cutting costs for users.

Blob activity is already on the rise. This week, the network reached its six blobs per block target for the first time. Coinbase’s Base network and Worldcoin were among the main drivers. Blobs were introduced earlier this year in the Dencun upgrade and have quickly become vital for lowering costs on layer 2.

The Fusaka upgrade will double blob capacity, moving from six to 12 per block. Over the following weeks, developers plan to raise the maximum even further, first to 15 and later to 21. Buterin said the team is cautious, stressing that this is new technology and requires careful rollout.

Vitalik’s Broader Vision

Buterin has been active on X in recent weeks, sharing essays and blog posts on where Ethereum is heading. He recently called for digital systems to be built on open and verifiable technology. He also argued that the future of Ethereum will lean on low-risk DeFi, where security and trust come before speculation.

PeerDAS fits into that broader vision. By making data availability more reliable and efficient, Ethereum can handle the next wave of rollups while protecting users. For Buterin, this is not just about performance. It is about building infrastructure that people can trust for decades to come.
