We are currently in the midst of a Frankenstein Renaissance. That’s fitting since “renaissance” means “rebirth.” There are currently three films and one TV show based on Mary Shelley’s iconic sci-fi horror novel coming soon or in production. Out of all of them, we’ve been most excited for Guillermo del Toro’s take on the classic tale of the scientist who decided to play god. And del Toro’s Frankenstein has officially brought us a haunting new trailer that has us even more hyped than we already were.
Oscar Isaac is Dr. Victor Frankenstein in this fantastic new trailer from one of our favorite directors, this adaptation will hew closer to its source material than many other versions. But at the heart of this story is still a man who does something monstrous. (Though his creation is far more gruesome and terrifying than the one made famous by Universal long ago. The classic monster iteration featured a flat top and neck bolts and could not articulate its deep pain.)
It’s not that the Doctor creates a new life from the remnants of death. It’s that he abandons his offspring to an existence of suffering. And that leads to many others paying for Victor’s sins. Because if Frankenstein’s monster can’t have love, he will bring rage—or so he tells us in this new Frankenstein trailer. Here’s Frankenstein‘s official synopsis from Netflix:
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Frankenstein stars Jacob Elordi as the Monster. It also features Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. You can get a taste of their incredible talents in the Frankenstein trailer above. Guillermo del Toro also wrote the screenplay.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein will come alive in select theaters on October 17. It then arrives at Netflix on November 7. That’s when we might also find out that the Frankenstein Renaissance peaked when it began.
