Listen, a good universe, fantastical or not, contains many different kinds of characters. You need some characters that are humble and sweet. At the same time, others should be wild and feisty. Then you’ll probably want your dreamers, lovers, warriors, anxious bunnies, and more. But one type of character that you just can’t do without is a hater. A hater is a character who often focuses on the negatives, finds joy in misery, and can be somewhat cynical. You know the hater in your life. But you also know that sometimes it’s fun to be a hater, and sometimes it’s fun to be with a hater. And when it comes to Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character, Sir Julien Davinos—well, we can safely say he’s a hater… But we love him for it.

Let’s dive deep into Sir Julien Davinos and break down what exactly makes Matt Mercer’s new Critical Role character (his first for a core campaign) tick… or in this case, hate.

How Do We First Meet Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character?
Matt Mercer’s character, Sir Julien Davinos, is among the last characters to be introduced in the first episode of Critical Role Campaign 4. In fact, only two more characters join the campaign after him. His lateness of appearance gives Sir Julien Davinos a certain gravitas.
Sir Julien Is a Member of House Royce, A Vassal House to the Sundered House of Royce
Before we fully meet Matt Mercer’s character, we are introduced to the trappings of Julien Davinos’ station as a member of House Davinos, a vassal house to the Sundered House of Royce. (One of the noble houses of the city of Dol-Makyar, where Critical Role Campaign 4 takes place.)
Sir Julien Davinos comes onto the scene riding in a gleaming and golden carriage, baroque and stylized, borne by four snow white horses and bearing the markings of the Sundered House of Royce. Inside the carriage are Sir Julien Davinos and his oldest childhood friend, the Lady Aranessa Royce. The Lady Aranessa, we learn, is the widow/ex-wife of the man of the hour, Thjazi Fang—whose death brings all of Critical Role Campaign 4‘s characters together to begin their adventures. Lady Aranessa and Sir Julien Davinos are on the way to Thjazi Fang’s funeral, and Aranessa is understandably verklempt… Sir Julien Davinos meanwhile… is not.
Matt Mercer’s Character, Sir Julien Davinos, Is Not a Very Comforting Shoulder to Cry On
While Lady Aranessa grieves and cries, shattered over the loss of someone she loves, Sir Julien Davinos does not offer her much comfort. In fact, he tells her that her reaction quite takes him aback. Aranessa tries to explain the depth of her feeling, but Matt Mercer’s Sir Julien Davinos insists that Thjazi Fang twice chose his pride over her love, and more or less that he got what was coming to him in Critical Role Campaign 4‘s opening death scene. He notes that if Thjazi had remained the man she loved, then he wouldn’t have ended up at the executioner’s block because no one in the history of any realm has ever ended up unfairly arrested. Julien even tells Aranessa that he will “protect you from your own unnecessary emotional pain, if need be.”
Sir! Bold of him to assume that he knows which emotional pain is unnecessary to Lady Aranessa. She tells him as much, and they arrive at the funeral, concluding their opening introduction. We feel like this first scene with Julien Davinos effectively paints a picture of who Matt Mercer’s character will be in this Critical Role campaign.

What Makes Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character Stand Out From the Rest (A.K.A., Be a Hater)
But why do we call Sir Julian Davinos a hater? Well, we’re introduced to 12 other characters and multiple NPCs in Critical Role Campaign 4, and every single one of them (except perhaps Ashley Johnson’s Vaelus) holds some level of affection for the late Thjazi Fang. But not Sir Julien Davinos, oh no. In Critical Role Campaign 4 episode one, Matt Mercer’s Julien Davinos literally says, “I hate him,” referring to the dead Fang. Hater behavior. But, in all seriousness, this opinion really does separate him from everyone else.

Additionally, Julien goes out of his way to snark and gloat over Thjazi Fang’s dead body. And I quote Matt Mercer as Sir Julien Davinos, “I look down at the well-adorned, well-remembered, well-beloved body of Thjazi, here in this warm hearth surrounded by the chattering voices of family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched, I can hearing the gentle occasional sobs and stutters of my dear friend Lady Aranessa, and just quietly look down upon him, ‘The only shame is I couldn’t watch you die twice.’” And then Sir Julien spits on the body!!! And walks away! Exhibit A, everyone.
Not to mention, during the actual execution of Thjazi Fang, a grin comes over Sir Julien Davinos’ face as he watches the other man die. That is a shocking reaction to the death of a person whom so many mourn. But Julien seems not only to experience joy at Thjazi Fang’s hanging, but to glory in feeling so.
If that weren’t enough, Matt Mercer is always describing Sir Julien Davinos as leaning against things, crossing his arms, and smirking in Critical Role Campaign 4. We don’t have to say it.
What Do We Know About Sir Julien Davinos’ Backstory?
But most haters aren’t born, they’re made. And so far, we’ve only learned a little bit about the backstory of Sir Julien Davinos from bits and pieces Matt Mercer has sprinkled into his role and Brennan Lee Mulligan, the game’s DM, has shared.
One thing we know is that Sir Julien Davinos is considered a hero of the battle of Maharlean Falls, and is known as the man who brought Thjazi Fang to heel. But we get the impression that the memory of this glory is fading with time.

Lady Aranessa says of Sir Julien, “You knocked my husband off his horse and brought him to justice.” Meanwhile, Thaisha Lloy, the mother of Halandil Fang’s children, has a less rosy view of it, saying, “You’re a lying scoundrel, a rat, who betrayed his father and his family for a last hope of glory… I don’t hate you, I pity you, if it takes this level of betrayal of your kin to claw your way out of the mud.”
But Sir Julien sees his history differently—Matt Mercer says in Critical Role Campaign 4 episode one, “My family was thrown into the mud by my father, and I pulled us back up. Your kin turned on all of those who helped lift him up, and he needed to be taught a lesson, and it just so happened I was the one who had the courage to do so.”
We suppose we’ll have to stay tuned to know more about what Sir Julien Davinos’ relationship with his family is like. But Thaisha does give us some interesting food for thought about Julien’s connection to the fae. She notes to Julien, “What good has it done [you]? The door to Fairie is still closed, and it’s only the work of my people which gives you a snowflake’s chance in hell at getting a real comeback.” We assume we’ll learn more about what that means soon enough.

What Are Sir Julien Davinos’ Relationships with the Rest of the Characters?
We know how Matt Mercer’s Julien Davinos got along with Thjazi Fang (badly), but what are his other character relationships like?

Mostly, we know that Thaisha really dislikes Julien. As a druid, she makes all the plants around him die when he walks through the door. But their relationship is deeper than that. It seems that Thaisha’s missing son is apprenticed to Sir Julien. Julien tells Thaisha that her son is becoming an accomplished soldier “because I have been his teacher.” And Thaisha promises that if anything happens to him, she will rip Julien limb from limb.
Other than that, it feels like most other characters don’t really like Julien that much, but we haven’t gotten strong insights into those relationships yet.
What Are Sir Julien Davinos’ Stats and Ability Scores in Critical Role Campaign 4?

Here’s what we learn about Matt Mercer’s character stats in Critical Role Campaign 4 episode one. Sir Julien Davinos has the following ability scores:
- Strength: 15
- Dexterity: 18
- Constitution: 18
- Intelligence: 11
- Wisdom: 8
- Charisma: 16
So, olde Julien can take a hit, but his common sense is pretty lacking… Tracks. We’re not totally sure about that charisma score given how many people he’s pissed off in just a little bit of screentime. Then again, we guess are charmed… a little! Our eyes are narrowed about it.
In addition, we learn that Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character has the following stats to his name, Hit Points/HP: 39, Armor Class/AC: 16. That’s a solid AC and a HIGH amount of HP. Again… needed with the number of people glaring daggers at him at any given moment.

What Does Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character Look Like?
Just what does Sir Julien Davinos look like, though? We learn the following about Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character. He’s a human man who has just entered his 30s. Julien has a lanky, compact build and wears the reinforced, leather military uniform of House Davinos, a vassal house to the Sundered House of Royce. The uniform is dark purple and grey with red trim. Across the right shoulder, Sir Julien Davinos wears an intricate silver metal paldron. On his other shoulder lies a dark green short cape with very elaborate designs of vines and flowers sewn through it. Julien wears a sheathed rapier on his left hip.
Additionally, Julien has heavily curly black hair that tumbles over his shoulders. He can often wear a stern, stoic look, but does enjoy a good smirk.
Most notably, Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character Sir Julien Davinos has his left hand fully wrapped in an intricate metal gauntlet of dark silver. It’s a deeply filigreed affair made up of multiple plates. This armor on his left hand almost looks unbalanced compared to the rest of his thin frame. We have no doubt that there’s something special about this particular gauntlet on Sir Julien’s hand.
What Shadow Is Clinging to Sir Julien Davinos?
Will Sir Julien Davinos have to pay for his haterade? It looks like Critical Role Campaign 4 is hinting that Matt Mercer’s character awakened something with his disrespect for Thjazi Fang’s body. The character of Bolaire, played by Taliesin Jaffe, learned that “there is an Orcish custom, all those candles, coins and everything, Thjazi Fang is part of the old path, he has been adorned with treasure, he is under a protection, and something has been done to cross the protection, something like a shadow follows Julien Davinos out of the home.”
It sounds like Bolaire picked up on Sir Julien Davinos stirring the ire of orcish spirits with his rudeness to the corpse. This manifestation is described as “the kind of magic people tend to ignore, a little bit of folklore, old superstition, and old wives’ tales, small and surreptitious, born into existence and begins to walk with Sir Julien.”
What will this mean for Sir Julien? Maybe an attitude adjustment, perhaps something else. We’ll have to keep watching Critical Role Campaign 4 to find out.
