The last time Sigourney Weaver played any permutation of her Oscar-nominated character Ellen Ripley was 1997’s Alien: Resurrection. For all you math fans out there, that’s nearly 30 years. And yet, Ms. Weaver has remained inextricably linked to the Alien franchise ever since. Fans have wanted to see her again going toe-to-claw with xenomorphs and nearly got their wish back in 2015. Weaver was in talks to return for Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, which would have ignored both Alien 3 and Resurrection. That production fell apart. However, hope springs again now, according to the actress herself at NYCC this past weekend.

During a panel at the convention (which we saw at THR), Weaver said she’s met with Disney about returning to the franchise. The meeting stemmed from the first 50 pages of a script from longtime series producer Walter Hill. The 83-year-old Hill, along with David Giler, took Dan O’Bannon’s original Star Beast script and shaped it into what became Alien. Weaver had very positive things to say about what she read.
“Walter Hill is a very good friend of mine, and he wrote 50 pages where Ripley would be now, and they are quite extraordinary. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox, Disney, or whoever it is now.
I said I have never felt the need. I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover.’ But what Walter has written seems so true to me as very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind.”
This alludes to an interesting premise, wherein, despite helping out the greater good of planet Earth, has run afoul of Weyland-Yutani, who, as we know, wants the xenomorph for their own purposes. Weaver went on to say, “She’s a problem to them, so she’s sort of tucked away. Anyway, I think it’s a very strong first 50 pages, and I’m thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be.”

Weaver herself just celebrated her 76th birthday, so it would seem to indicate this script would, like Blomkamp’s, ignore everything that happened after Aliens. Since 1997, all films and now TV have taken place before or right after the first film. The notion that Ripley has been in prison since the end of Aliens would be a wild one. But the Alien series is nothing if not a condemnation of corporatocracies, so why not explore that in this day and age?
