10 Fandom-Themed Recipes to Try This Fall Camila Buck | usagoldmines.com

Food is a universal language. It unites folks from all walks of life and from all over the world, bridging language barriers and showcasing the tastiness of other cultures out there. On top of traditional dishes passed down through generations, there is plenty of delicious food portrayed in the media. The first thing that comes to my mind when talking about food in pop culture is anime food, which always looks absolutely phenomenal on screen. But there are recipes out there for basically every single fandom in existence. Cook books upon cook books dedicated to fandoms like The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, and so many more exist, and they’re packed with enough recipes to feed even the pickiest of eaters.

Here are 10 fandom-themed recipes that are fun to make and a pleasure to eat.

Rengoku’s Bento (Demon Slayer)

Based on a Taisho-era beef hot pot, the dish Rengoku happily devours in Demon Slayer is called Gyunabe bento. It’s made out of thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a sweet and savory soy sauce broth, and it’s accompanied by a soft-boiled egg and pickled ginger.

My favorite part of the dish is the marbling of the beef. Combined with the steamed short-grain rice, the texture and flavor complement the beef and tofu perfectly. Another thing I will add, choosing the right mirin and soy sauce is a must. An easy and delicious recipe to follow for those interested in trying this Demon Slayer dish can be found on NoRecipes.com.

Itadori’s Meatballs (Jujutsu Kaisen)

With this amazing recipe for chicken meatballs seen on Jujutsu Kaisen, you’ll be ready to unleash your own domain expansion in no time. And it’s so easy to make, even Megumi can do it without messing it up!

As seen in a post-credit scene for Episode 13, this deliciously simple recipe is perfect for a quick bite or as a side to an entree. This is also a very easy recipe to double up for large gatherings if needed. For a delicious and gluten free version, check out Gluten Free With Me’s recipe. Though this recipe includes a delicious broth recipe to go with it, the meatballs are delicious enough to be eaten by themselves or with dipping sauces as well.

Sam’s Hobbit Stew (The Lords of the Rings)

“Potatoes! Boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew.” We all know the words… and now, thanks to The Starving Chef, we all have the recipe.

Lord of the Rings marathons are something I value and enjoy doing with my friends and family, and food is always at the center of these gatherings. Whether a delicious Prancing Pony inspired recipe or a desert recipe straight from the Shire, each dish only adds to the experience and makes us feel like we’re there

Gather your fellow LOTR-obsessed friends and get cooking! With the weather cooling down as well, it’s the perfect time for a hot, steamy stew to keep your insides warm and fuzzy. This recipe does allow for a couple substitutions, making it easy to make it your own while staying true to Sam’s rabbit stew.

Ba-wan Soup (Spirited Away)

10 Fandom-Themed Recipes to Try This Fall_1

As previously mentioned, anime has some of the best looking food in media, especially Studio Ghibli. It’s hard to watch anime without becoming hungry, and I blame movies like Spirited Away for setting that standard. Wonderful story aside, the food in that beautifully animated movie is incredibly tasty-looking, and it’s not a surprise that there are recipes upon recipes for almost every dish in the movie.

Focusing on the fact that fall is arriving in the US, dishes like the Taiwanese dish ba-wan soup are perfect for this time of the year. Ba-wan is basically a Taiwanese meatball usually made with pork, mushrooms, and bamboo. And this Spirited Away inspired ba-wan soup recipe by Honey’s Anime hits the spot.

Sisko’s Stuffing (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

Let me get one fact out of the way; I am obsessed with stuffing. Stuffing is essential not just for Thanksgiving, but for fall dishes overall. The texture, the moisture level, the seasonings; everything has to be in perfect harmony to create the perfect stuffing dish.

Enter Sisko’s version. Seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Blaze of Glory,” Sisko’s stuffing is absolutely delicious. This recipe by Food Replicator is not just accurate and easy to make but easy to double up as well. This makes it perfect for Thanksgiving! I agree with the author’s claim that complaining about the tarragon in the recipe, like Michael Eddington does in DS9, is in fact blasphemous. It sits just fine in the recipe and blends well with the thyme. But if tarragon really is a deal-breaker for you, there are substitutions listed for you to try.

Chicken Pocket Pies (Critical Role: Vox Machina)

Wonder straight into Tal’Dorei with a recipe so good, it’ll become a quick favorite. Originally published in the Exquisite Exandria cookbook by Critical Role, Scanlan’s Chicken Pocket Pies are as exquisite as the cookbook title suggests. These are not to be confused with Scanlan’s Hand Pies, which are basically homemade pop tarts.

Instead, these are more like portable chicken pot pies. If you opt to make the dough from scratch, you’re looking at at least two hours of prep and cook time, so this isn’t the quickest recipe to make. This recipe makes 10 pies, but it’s also fairly easy to double up if you’re feeding a larger group.

Gambit’s Gumbo Recipe (Rogue & Gambit comics)

This amazing gumbo recipe comes from volume 5 of the Rogue & Gambit comics released in 2023. Take heed of the note before this sinfully delicious recipe; be patient and take your time making this gumbo the right way. With meticulous details and a fun tone, this dish takes roughly four hours to cook up to perfection. Four hours might seem like a lot, but it pays off in the end. The flavors simmer together from hours, having the time to soak up the vegetables and chicken just right. My mouth is literally watering as I type this.

Smother some steamy cooked rice with this gift from the gods of Marvel and thank me later.

Alfred’s Mulligatawny Soup (Batman)

I love a good soup recipe. A good bowl of soup will touch your soul and warm you up as if you were being hugged by your best friend, and this recipe does just that. The Gluttonous Geek has a lovely recipe for Alfred’s Mulligatawny soup, and this soup is no different. It also reminds us of just how wonderful of a caretaker Alfred is. I can just picture him feeding a younger or just broody Bruce Wayne this soup to warm him up or spook away a cold.

Fairly easy to make, this recipe takes as long as any good soup takes to cook (looking at around an hour and fifteen minutes) and is a flavor explosion. The curry powder and mango nectar elevate the dish, complementing the chicken and ham. This soup literally feels like a warm hug from Batman’s best friend, and it’s lovely.

Nerf Kebabs (Star Wars)

These did not last once made in my kitchen. Between me, my husband, and my two kids, these kebabs sat idly for maybe 45 seconds before they never saw the light of day again, and for a good reason: they are exquisite.

Originally by Germán Enrique Woods but posted by Copy Me That, the nerf kebabs recipe require a special seasoning that I recommend keeping for more dishes. The nerfstake seasoning is easy to make and its recipe is also provided.

It’s hard to tell you what my favorite part of this dish is. The bread is delicious, the meat is amazing, the seasoning is perfect. I guess the only thing I don’t like about them is that they eventually come to an end.

Chicken Valyria (House of the Dragon)

Want to eat like Valyrian royalty? Now you can with this delicious House of the Dragon inspired recipe by The Gluttonous Geek! Though this recipe isn’t in the show, the author does a wonderful Valyrian spin on a classic Roman dish and it’s fire, no pun intended. Easy to make, perfect for the turning weather, and just medieval enough that you feel worthy of a dragon, this recipe fully embodies the Valyrian elegance with the touch of Zinfandel and cinnamon.

This creamy dish is perfect with the al dente pappardelle pasta as listed in the recipe, but I found you can also substitute the pasta with rice if that’s more your style. The juicy chicken complements the creamy sauce well, and that optional fish sauce can remain optional, thank the Seven.

Stay hungry and nerdy with these fandom recipes, my friends.
