LOKI Writer Pitched a Young Avengers Project with Kang Kyle Anderson | usagoldmines.com

Of all the potential projects that haven’t as yet materialized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think the Young Avengers no-show is the most frustrating. For much of Phase 4 and Phase 5, movies and TV series started setting up characters like Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Eli Bradley, and Billy and Tommy Maximoff all popped up one after another. Naturally that meant we’d get the Young Avengers right away, eh? Nope! In four years, the most we’ve gotten was a joke scene in The Marvels. However, we now know at least one project at least made the pitching stage.

In a Reddit AMA for his latest series, Chad Powers, writer and creator Michael Waldron (Loki, Avengers: Doomsday) briefly shared that he and writer Jeff Loveness pitched a project where the Young Avengers would go up against one of the multiverse’s infinite Kang variants.

One Redditor asked Waldron the following:

“Without spoiling anything, as you were a writer on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, is there anything that you learnt from those initial drafts of the script that moved over to help you write for the new version, Avengers: Doomsday?”

Waldron, while not actually answering the question the guy asked, did provide an interesting anecdote.

Jeff Loveness and I spent an afternoon pitching on the Young Avengers defeating a version of Kang and being so stoked about it…only to discover that that particular Kang carried a little card that said to Be Patient with him, it was his first day as a Kang. And then they were so bummed. I think he was gonna be the lizard Kang from the end of Kang Dynasty? I don’t know. Anyway we had fun.

Waldron and Loveness definitely seemed like good choices to write on a Young Avengers v Kang project. Not only did the character of Kang make his MCU debut in Loki, but so did Young Loki. Waldron also introduced America Chavez in his script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Loveness picked up the Kang baton with his script for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which also saw the debut of Cassie Lang’s Stature persona.

We, of course, know why Marvel Studios abandoned its plans for Kang and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. (Kevin Feige said it was due to the public not responding to Kang and not at all because of actor Jonathan Major’s convictions for assault and harassment. Sure, Koven.) The project morphed into Avengers: Doomsday, which Waldron is co-writing. But that alone shouldn’t have kept the Young Avengers from taking their place somewhere in the franchise. Maybe one day before they become the Old Avengers, huh?
