All respect to any movie featuring the king of the monsters himself, but for my money, the best Godzilla movie since the 1954 original is 2023’s Godzilla Minus One. The period-set treatise on Japan’s Postwar shame in the guise of a terrifying monster movie won a well-deserved VFX Oscar. Rare for a Japanese-produced Godzilla movie, Minus One was a massive international hit. So naturally, Toho Studios would produce a follow-up. Takashi Yamazaki is back as writer/director/VFX and we have an official title. It’s both fitting and kind of confusing. Godzilla -0.0, or Godzilla Minus Zero.
Toho announced the new title via a brief video on Twitter to commemorate 2025’s Godzilla Day. The logo for the film is exactly the same as Minus One, except, you know, for the number. So here’s the confusing bit. What could that mean? Godzilla Minus One, according to Yamazaki, refers to both it taking place prior to the original movie, but also that Godzilla’s destruction took Japan from a “post-war zero situation” to a “minus.” If you know math, you know that subtracting zero from a number just leaves the original number. So, Godzilla Minus Zero would just be Godzilla, wouldn’t it? That’s like saying “the day after yesterday.”
In any case, we’re thrilled Yamazaki will get a chance to continue the themes and story from Minus One as they’re some of the deepest and most resonant in any film of its type. The climax, in which the people of Japan have to band together to fight Godzilla themselves given the end of WWII means the country can’t employ any official military action. I trust this team to give us another devastating, action-packed installment of the story.
No release date or official plot yet, but we’ll for sure keep you posted on the stomping to come.
