Last Living STAR TREK: TOS Director, Ralph Senensky, Dies Age 102 Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Ralph Senesky, one of the last living links to the era of the original Star Trek, has died at 102. The news came to us via Comic Book Resources. You might not know the name Ralph Senensky, but he directed six episodes of Gene Roddenberry’s iconic sci-fi series. He was the last surviving director of the iconic original 79 episodes of the show. The episodes he directed were season one’s “This Side of Paradise,” and season two’s “Metamorphosis,” “Obsession,” and “Bread and Circuses.” For season three, he directed “The Omega Glory,” “There Is in Truth No Beauty,” and “The Tholian Web.”

Of all the episodes he directed, his most beloved is “This Side of Paradise,” an early episode that allowed Spock to show his emotional side for the first time. The episode was so special to actor Leonard Nimoy, he wrote Senesky a letter, saying of the episode “It was not only a special Spock experience, but it was special for me as well, in that I felt safely in the hands of a capable and sensitive director. Unfortunately, a rare experience in TV.” Senesky directed dozens of other TV series over the years, and his last film credit was the short film The Right Regrets, which he directed at age 90.

There are now only a handful of creatives still alive involved with the original Star Trek. Creator Gene Roddenberry passed away back in 1991. One of the biggest contributors to the mythology of the original Trek, Gene L. Coon, passed away in 1973, at the premature age of 49. Coon created the Klingons, Khan, the name “United Federation of Planets,” the Prime Directive, and more. He sadly never lived to see Star Trek go from canceled TV series to pop culture juggernaut. Of course, much of the original cast is no longer with us. Only George Takei, Walter Koenig, and William Shatner remain. Rumors persist that Paramount wants Shatner back for one more adventure as Captain Kirk at age 94. We’ll have to wait and see.
