Over Halloween weekend, many celebrities showed their love for their favorite DC Comics characters. Paris Hilton paid tribute to Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman from Batman Returns, for example. But pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter made the biggest splash as a DC icon. On Halloween, she performed in a sparkly Wonder Woman costume, modeled after Lynda Carter’s iconic ’70s TV series outfit. Some know-it-all fans online took umbrage at Sabrina being a non-canon “blonde Wonder Woman.” But Lynda Carter quickly defended the “Espresso” hitmaker, and posted the following to X:
Lynda Carter said “I see this little argument about Wonder Woman being brunette… Reminder! Wonder Woman is within all of us, and sometimes, she has blonde hair like [Sabrina Carpenter]. True, the Princess Diana version has always been dark-haired, as was her mother, Queen Hippolyta, as Wonder Woman. But there are other canonical versions of Wonder Woman who have been blonde. In the ’70s, the Super Friends cartoon had her nemesis Cheetah travel back in time, taking her place and becoming Wonder Woman instead.
In the comics, the second Wonder Girl, Cassie Sandsmark, became a blonde Wonder Woman in a future timeline. Most famously, the pony-tailed Amazon known as Artemis took over as Wonder Woman for almost a year in the ’90s. Okay, we admit, she’s more of a redhead/strawberry blonde type, unlike Sabrina Carpenter. But it still counts as a fairer-haired version of Wonder Woman.

Carpenter showing off Lynda Carter’s legendary costume on stage garnered much media attention, although Variety mistakenly called her “Superwoman.” This received a puzzled response from DC Studios’ James Gunn on Threads, who simply commented, “Superwoman??” It’s not as if Wonder Woman is some obscure character. Maybe they saw the blonde hair and meant to say “Supergirl?” Hey, maybe next year, Carpenter can put on a Supergirl costume for Halloween, throw everyone off, and use a brunette wig with it. We’d be here for it.
