AI usage has been a hot-button topic for as long as it has been around. Mixed reviews over the use of AI-generated celebrity voices has left a bad taste in plenty of mouths, including that of Zelda Williams. On the contrary, others view it as innovative. Actors Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine are in full support of the technology, both licensing their voices to AI audio company ElevenLabs.

ElevenLabs is an AI audio company that houses a range of celebrity voices, alive and dead. The company recently launched a storefront in which brands can pay to reproduce iconic celebrity voices. Partnering with ElevenLabs, McConaughey and Caine join the extensive library of celebrity voice replications such as Judy Garland and J Robert Oppenheimer.
“For years, I’ve lent my voice to stories that moved people—tales of courage, of wit, of the human spirit,” Caine said. “Now, I’m helping others find theirs.”
McConaughey is also investing an undisclosed amount to ElevenLabs, a company he’s collaborated with since it was founded in 2022. The famed actor has stated before that he finds the company to be very “impressive.” He is using the AI technology to produce a Spanish-language audio version of his newsletter “Lyrics of Livin’” in his own voice.
“I launched my newsletter as a way to share stories and ideas in my own voice with those who want to listen. Now, thanks to ElevenLabs, ‘Lyrics of Livin’’ is expanding with a Spanish language edition, allowing us to reach and connect with even more people,” McConaughey said.

“To everyone building with voice technology: keep going. You’re helping create a future where we can look up from our screens and connect through something as timeless as humanity itself — our voices,” he adds.
How ElevenLabs Works
ElevenLabs’ “Iconic Voice Marketplace” collaborates with other companies and creative teams to license celebrity voices for various projects and content, including book narration. It’s a two-sided platform that connects requesting companies with the relevant IP rights holder. Other recognizable voices include Liza Minelli, John Wayne, Maya Angelou, Alan Turing, and Babe Ruth.
“With ElevenLabs, we can preserve and share voices—not just mine, but anyone’s,” Caine said. “ElevenLabs is at the very forefront of technology, using innovation not to replace humanity, but to celebrate it… It’s not about replacing voices; it’s about amplifying them, opening doors for new storytellers everywhere.”

With the rise of AI and recreating celebrity voices comes one massive problem: ethics. Without limitations, you can essentially use voice-generated technology to make a celebrity say whatever you want. Not everyone has the right intentions. Many also find it distasteful to use the voices of dead celebrities without their permission. That being said, if done the right way and with proper permission, this technology could be used for good. No matter where you stand on the issue, it will surely to interesting to see how it develops.
