It’s been in the works for nearly a decade. But soon, fans will finally be able to visit the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Via The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that the museum will open its doors to the public on September 22, 2026. The long-in-the-works museum will feature art from all forms of narrative storytelling, from cave paintings, to comic books, to film and television. Many of the items in the museum will come directly from George Lucas’ massive private collection, which he has accumulated over the decades.
In a statement, Lucas Museum co-founder (and George Lucas’ wife), Melody Hobson, said, “This is a museum of the people’s art. The images are illustrations of beliefs we live with every day. For that reason, this art belongs to everyone.” Lucas himself added, “Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life.”

The museum will be located in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, and the building, which looks like a parked spaceship, will have 35 galleries occupying 100,000 square feet. Each gallery name reflects the human experience, including love, family, community, play, work, and sports. The Lucas Museum will showcase a permanent collection that features more than 40,000 distinct pieces. The museum itself cost upward of a billion dollars to build. The pandemic halted construction for a long time, along with other factors, but it’s now nearly complete.
Of course, this being a Lucas museum, there will be several pieces of art and props from Star Wars. But they will not be the focus. Recently, George Lucas and director Guillermo del Toro previewed the museum for thousands of fans at Comic-Con in San Diego. Queen Latifah, a sci-fi superfan herself, narrated the panel. Then, at New York Comic Con in October, Lucas appeared at a panel moderated by Martin Scorsese. He appeared together with fantasy art legends Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. Boris Vallejo’s contemporary in fantasy art, Frank Frazetta, will have his iconic 1970 cover for A Princess of Mars on display at the museum.
