We Ate Kraft’s Limited-Edition Apple Pie Mac & Cheese with Other WEIRD Foods Michael Walsh | usagoldmines.com

Over the last few years, Kraft has been willing to get weird with its iconic Mac & Cheese. The Kraft is back with another weird foodstuff, so we got weird with Kraft Mac & Cheese Apple Pie. The results were stranger than we expected.company has released limited-edition flavors like Everything Bagel, Valentine’s Candy, and Pumpkin Spice. So it seemed only fair when they sent me a box of their newest special offering—Kraft Mac & Cheese Apple Pie— that I should get weird with it, too. But the most surprising thing of all is that the stranger I got, the better it tasted.

Kraft describes its new limited time Mac & Cheese Apple Pie flavor as “a shockingly delicious, sweet-meets-savory flavor that blends creamy mac and cheese with spiced apple pie for the ultimate seasonal flavor mashup.” Until you open up the flavor packet, though, it’s no different from a box of the normal stuff. The fun only begins when you open the flavor packet. It packs a delicious wallop.

The powder might have the signature orange cheesy Kraft glow, but it smells exactly like an apple pie. It was so good, I wasn’t worried about anything I had planned.

It doesn’t look like it, but boy does this stuff smell great

The macaroni, butter, and milk dilutes that aroma once it all gets mixed together in the pan, but you can still smell the apple pie flavor. It just doesn’t totally translate.

The first surprise of my meal came when I actually ate it. This apple pie mac and cheese mostly tastes like a less flavorful version of the regular Kraft Mac & Cheese. You don’t really get a lot of apple. It’s more like mac and cheese with a hint of cinnamon and maybe nutmeg. Even then, you mostly get those flavors after you finish your bite. This apple pie cheese concoction coats the mouth. The longer it lingers in your mouth, the more the cinnamon and a hint of the apple come out. I didn’t enjoy the way it stuck in my mouth, so that was a double-edged sword of pasta, apple, and cheese.

The apple flavor hides in the macaroni, butter, and milk. Like a coward.

The actual eating of Kraft’s Apple Pie meal is totally fine. It’s definitely not bad or gross. It’s just not as enjoyable as a normal box, nor is it as weird as I had hoped. I wanted an apple pie forward mac and cheese, not a mac and cheese that waved hello to an apple pie on the way to your kitchen.

But don’t worry, I’m very willing to get weird with food (documented!), and my journey with this stuff was just getting started. First up: Kraft Mac & Cheese Apple Pie with… apple pie.

A piece of apple pie with mac and cheese on top
This is the life I’ve chosen and I’m okay with that.

I know that some people eat their apple pie with a big ole slice of cheese on it. I have never tried this because I only have one precious life. But I am also a dedicated professional, and this seemed like an obvious way I should try Kraft’s new flavor.

Turns out it wasn’t really that weird. At all. More shocking? It was pretty good. The macaroni and cheese paired well with the pie, especially with bites of of apple. The flavors went well together. The actual pie even brought out more of the macaroni’s apple flavor.

It also helped that I served my pie room temperature. Since the mac and cheese was already warm, I didn’t want both to be hot. (Later I realized why this had been a truly fantastic decision.) If my pie had a thinner crust, the chewiness of the macaroni might have been a problem, but because mine was thicker it didn’t cause any weird problems when I bit into it. It wasn’t the best thing I ever ate, and I’m not going to be eating my apple pie like this ever again, but there was genuinely nothing wrong with this. It was stupid but not in a gross way, just a fun little novelty dish.

(Note: If you “apple pie with a slice of cheese” people think this vindicates your life choices it doesn’t. It just doesn’t. This is my job. During my personal time, I’ll be eating apple pie the correct way, a.k.a. without cheese. Or macaroni.)

I know I’m not exactly normal, but this looks awesome, right? Right.

I had less hopes for my final dish, because while I always eat apple pie with vanilla ice cream I wasn’t exactly optimistic about eating vanilla ice cream with apple pie-flavored mac and cheese.

Yeah… this was easily the best way to eat Kraft’s seasonal variation. Or at least it was for a couple minutes. I’m not a chemist, so I don’t know why, but the vanilla ice cream brought out all of the mac and cheese’s apple pie flavor. This was the dish that came closest to delivering on the promise of the powder’s smell. It was—and I still can’t believe this is true—genuinely good. It was actually tasty and enjoyable. Until it wasn’t.

The macaroni got cold. Then….then this whole thing got bad. The chilled macaroni was so chewy it quickly went from delightful to disgusting. It was like eating ice cream with the rubber hose used to water the apple orchard. I had to stop immediately. The awful texture completely overwhelmed the nice flavor combination. (This is when I realized I had been very smart with how I ate my piece of pie. Serving either the pie chilled or mac and cheese chilled would have ruined the whole thing. Good job by me.)

Everything mixed together in the pan yet it just looks like normal mac and cheese.

Here’s what I would do if I were a wonderful, beloved, treasured reader who finds themselves inspired by this post and wants to try Kraft Mac & Cheese Apple Pie themselves. First, do everything exactly the way I did it until you got to the ice cream. Then, instead of putting a big helping of the mac and cheese on your cold ice cream, just add it one bite at a time. That way the macaroni won’t get cold and chewy.

It won’t look as pretty as my strangely appealing serving, but who cares. Kraft and I got weird so you don’t have to. Well, not as weird, but you know what I mean.

Kraft Mac & Cheese Apple Pie is available for a limited time at Walmart.
