The Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers’ minor league hockey team, rose to the challenge with this unique, Neon Genesis Evangelion-inspired intro. Set to the opening theme and paired with eye-catching animations and transitions, the clip replicates the intro to the iconic ’90s anime. Through a side-by-side comparison, it’s pretty spot on. The coach even poses as Gendo! The intro plays at the start of every home game.
Neon Genesis Evangelion follows fourteen-year-old Shinji, who is recruited by his estranged father to pilot a giant sentient machine to battle monstrous Angels and protect Earth. A post-apocalyptic monster-fighting series at the surface, the anime dives deep into psychological and existential themes. Debuting in 1995, Neon Genesis Evangelion grew a sort of cult following over the years.
Credits for the, well, credits go to the team’s creative department and intern Molly, whose account they were posted on. The post is up to almost 400 thousand likes and 1.8 million views on TikTok.
