If you’re like me, you have given up all social media. For real. It’s done wonders for my mental and emotional health. Well, I should say, all but one social media platform. Letterboxd is part movie database, part personal watch log, and part community chat. It’s genuinely therapeutic for a cinema freak. Now you can add a fourth facet…actually watching movies. Letterboxd has announced Letterboxd Video Store, which will launch in December. With it, fans will be able to watch films that are hard to find, sought after, or don’t yet have distribution. That means the time between when you add a film to your watchlist and when you check it off will shrink.

As part of the official announcement, we learned that Letterboxd Video Store will allow users to rent movies from a curated list. This isn’t, crucially, a subscription service. It’s an ala carte digital library. They position it as literally like a video store with virtual shelves.
“We program these shelves using millions of watchlists, reviews and other secret sauce signals,” the announcement said. “It’s like walking into your local video store and seeing the ’employee picks’ shelf—and those employees are countless Letterboxd members across the globe.
- Festival standouts that are yet to be distributed.
- Long-watchlisted titles finally made available.
- Restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating.
- Limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time).
The development of this service comes from a desire to actually watch movies you want to watch. The devs also assure users the movies will come to the store because they appear on watchlists, not simply because they’re easy or cheaper to license. At launch the service will be available on the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Airplay. Additional Smart TV apps are in the works.
This is kind of a film lover’s dream, so if you’re a big ol’ movie dork like me, look for more info at their website.
