Is the Birth of Cooper Howard’s Daughter the Reason Why the Bombs Drop on FALLOUT? Michael Walsh | usagoldmines.com

Cooper Howard was probably right when he called Robert House a “f***ing lunatic.” That doesn’t mean RobCo’s founder wasn’t (isn’t?) also a genius. When the mathematician-roboticist-casino owner talks we listen. After playing Fallout: New Vegas, we also pay attention to what his computers tell him. And in Fallout season two, episode five, both Mr. House and his calculations said every member of the Howard family is connected to both Deathclaws and the bombs that lead to the end of the world. Mr. House didn’t know how or why, and that makes it Fallout‘s biggest question.

How Does Janey Howard Factor Into the Bombs Dropping on Fallout?

In a flashback years before The Great War, Robert House told Cooper Howard, “Our destinies are, um… mathematically intertwined.” Their shared fate seemed to begin on what was likely the happiest day in Coop’s life. Here’s what House said about his advanced computations and the first time they foretold of a nuclear war we know will happen:

I routinely design and run mathematical paradigms based on global, political, and socioeconomic conditions in an effort to… predict future events. And one spring morning, the data coalesced, and it told me, in no uncertain terms, that the world would… well, end.

The date of the end of the world may not interest you, Mr. Howard. But the date the data coalesced might: April 14th, 2065, at 5:17 a.m.

The day Mr. House was finally able to calculate the end of the world on Fallout was the day Janey Howard was born.

Janey Howard will only be 12 when the bombs fall, and Fallout‘s Great War begins. She’ll also be dressed like a cowboy performing with her dad at a kid’s birthday party when the world ends. Safe to say that literal child won’t be the one who pushes the button that kicks off armageddon. And yet, the arrival of Cooper Howard’s daughter into the world put the world on a path to nuclear destruction. How could an innocent newborn doom the planet? We don’t yet know exactly how, but we do know Janey Howard’s arrival fundamentally changed the motivations, goals, plans, and life of her mother, a woman who was one of the most important people in the world of Fallout before The Great War.

How Does Barb Howard Factor Into the Bombs Dropping on Fallout?

Mr. House told Coop he believes his wife Barb Howard is directly connected to the future of America. Unlike other Vault-Tec executives, though, House didn’t rule out Barb as a candidate to drop the bombs on Fallout. It seems unlikely Barb did, since Janey was not secure in a bunker when they dropped. But that doesn’t mean Barb Howard’s actions didn’t indirectly lead to their detonation and the start of the Great War on Fallout.

Did new mom Barb—suddenly fearful for her child’s safety in a world she could see firsthand was growing more dangerous every day —become convinced nuclear war was inevitable and therefore wanted to control when and how it happened via Vault-Tec? Is that why Janey’s birth began the countdown to nuclear destruction on Fallout? Because it changed Barb Howard’s perspective and her goals? It’s certainly possible.

It’s also possible that Janey’s birth gave someone leverage over a previously reluctant Barb Howard. What if she only became dangerous because someone even more powerful than Robert House threatened Barb and her family? What if that person used Janey to take advantage of Barb Howard’s position in Vault-Tec for their own aims on Fallout? That would explain why her birth suddenly set humanity on a path to destruction it had been narrowly avoiding until then.

Whatever the truth, in some way, everyone in the Howard family contributed to the end of the world on Fallout. We know because Coop’s unexpected arrival into House’s calculations briefly delayed nuclear war.

As “curiously vexing” as House finds the significance of Janey’s birth and Barb’s unknown level of involvement in the approaching nuclear war, he’s even more troubled by how Cooper Howard factors into all of it.

Barbara was supposed to come to Vegas alone to sell Mr. House the cold fusion he sought. But when Cooper Howard unexpectedly bought a ticket to accompany her on the trip, House’s computers pushed the date of bombs dropping on Fallout forward one month. Cooper Howard, despite being just one single man in a global story involving millions, is important enough to delay nuclear war by a full month.

Fallout season two, episode five ended with Cooper Howard telling his wife they need to talk. Will he talk her out of what she has planned? Will Coop serve as her conscience? Or will he merely delay the inevitable by creating an unplanned obstacle? Perhaps it’s Coop confronting Barb Howard at all on Fallout that actually leads to the bombs dropping earlier than planned, as Mr. House shares.

Maybe. Or maybe Coop is the whole reason the world will end. Mr. House thinks the actor is really a “killer.” And when someone is about to kill the whole world, that’s an accusation with a lot of weight. And yet, ultimately, House believes it’s far more likely someone else entirely will push the button. It’s someone who has already made a major impact on Cooper Howard and the world by unleashing monsters on both.

How Do Deathclaws Factor Into the Bombs Dropping on Fallout?

Mr. House provided technology used in the Power Armor soldiers like Coop used while fighting in the Battle of Alaska. That’s how the RobCo CEO saw the Deathclaw that spared Cooper Howard’s life on Fallout. He believes that, like Barb, the creature is “connected to the future of this great nation” for one terrifying reason: Mr. House thinks the person(s) who made Deathclaws is the very same “player at the table” his computers can’t account for, the one who will ultimately drop the bombs and bring about the end of the world in Fallout‘s universe. It’s a mystery figure with immense power (maybe more than anyone in the world of Fallout has ever realized).

Why Did the Bombs Drop? Is Fallout‘s Most Important Question

Robert House is smart. If he and his computers say Deathclaws, Barb Howard, Janey Howard, Cooper Howard, the bombs, and ultimately the end of the world are all connected on Fallout, we believe him. When we find out what all these connections are, we’ll understand the question at the heart of the series. It’s not just “who” ends the world, it’s why.
