Ron Perlman’s Cameo on Fallout Season 2, Explained
The impaled Ghoul was on the verge of going feral because no person would hand him his satchel of vials in Fallout season two, episode six. He needs them to stave off the dark fate that always hovers over him. But in the darkness of night, a large, powerful figure arrived to save him. It snapped the metal pole like a twig before lifting the Ghoul up. From there, the mysterious figure tied him up and dragged him to a church in the desert. Inside, we finally learned who had saved the Ghoul and why. It’s actor Ron Perlman playing one of Fallout‘s Super Mutants.
“There’s a war coming, and we need you healthy,” said the giant figure who wants the Ghoul alive for a battle between humans and those they call “abominations” on Fallout. Abominations like ghouls and the green-skinned figure’s own kind, super mutants. Yes, it appears Ron Perlman’s Super Mutant character in Fallout season two wants to recruit The Ghoul specifically for the upcoming fight.
What Is a Super Mutant on Fallout? And Who Is Ron Perlman’s Super Mutant?
Super mutants are a recurring race in the Fallout games. Like ghouls, they were once humans. But where ghouls are the result of exposure to radiation, someone has to make super mutants. Super Mutants were all people intentionally given FEV, the Forced Evolutionary Virus, in Fallout‘s world. After being a major element of most Fallout video games, FEV has suddenly become a major plot point on Prime Video’s show, so we’re not surprised the super mutants are emerging as well. You can learn all about the green goo that rewrites human DNA with our comprehensive explainer.

Fallout‘s super mutants are large, strong beings with extraordinary endurance who are also immune to disease and radiation. Many, though not all, are also very intelligent. But while FEV is a man-made virus that pre-dates The Great War, humans aren’t responsible for every group of those (usually) green-skinned beings. A being called The Master, himself a monstrous product of FEV, made super mutants to become a super race on Fallout. The problem is that mutants are also sterile, so it’s not exactly a long-term solution to mankind’s problems.
It’s unclear from his cameo what region of the country Perlman’s super mutant comes from in Fallout season two, or who made him, or if he’s playing a mutant we’ve previously met in the Fallout games. For now, it feels like Ron Perlman is playing a super mutant new to Fallout‘s world, but that could always change.
The appearance, level of intelligence, manner of speaking, and residence in the Mojave Desert suggests that Perlman’s Fallout season two character comes from a group of super mutants made in the west coast. He might even be the creation of the Master himself. Some of the Master’s surviving mutants carried on his quest to create a new human race in Fallout.
What Does Ron Perlman’s Cameo as a Super Mutant Reveal to Us About Fallout Season 2
What we do know from his Fallout season two cameo is that Ron Perlman’s super mutant character does not want to work with humans like some other super mutants who strive for coexistence. He’s preparing for war. And he sees it as a battle between humans and every other race, which he considers “kin.”

He also has a specific target, and that target suggests who dropped the bombs on Fallout. Perlman’s super mutant says the Enclave “set all of this in motion.” The Enclave is responsible for the creation of some super mutants, though it typically then kills them. (Which we briefly saw in season one when a dead mutant’s hand fell to the side of a gurney at an Enclave base.) But it’s clear Perlman’s green vengeance-seeking mutant blames the Enclave for everything, not just for making and forgetting about creatures like him.
The Ghoul says he works alone, but that doesn’t mean Perlman’s mutant is a lone soldier. Before he knocked the Ghoul out, he said he wasn’t allowed to know where “we” live. Perlman’s super mutant isn’t alone in that church in his Fallout season two cameo. There are others like him getting ready for war with the Enclave. Whether that means there are more super mutants, ghouls, or even intelligent deathclaws in his army we don’t yet know. We just know the Enclave has enemies everywhere, and some of them are very large, very strong, very green, and have very long memories.
Ron Perlman’s Deep Fallout Connections Make His Season 2 Cameo a Fun Easter Egg
Of course, the appearance of a full-fledged super mutant will likely have a resonating impact on Fallout season two. But Ron Perlman’s Fallout cameo is not only important inside the series, but also in our world. TV-only Fallout fans might not understand the connection, but they might have heard Fallout‘s key catch-phrase at some point or another. “War. War never changes.” In fact, Barb Howard famously homaged it in season one of the Prime Video series.
But what does this have to do with Ron Perlman? Well, it turns out none other than Perlman himself is responsible for uttering this iconic four-word line (and more) in the introduction of just about every Fallout game. For many years now, Perlman has been assuring players into the beloved franchise and the start of their Fallout adventures.
Speaking of his place in Fallout history, Perlman recently shared, “They invited me to do the very first Fallout back in the ’90s, I think. They gave me $40 and a sandwich.” But then Perlman was invited back to lend his voice to a second Fallout game and “later the third, fourth, and now it’s like a whole brand. I didn’t see that coming.” And now, with his super mutant cameo, Perlman is officially a part of the Fallout TV series… Even though he hasn’t said his iconic line… yet.
Will Ron Perlman Return on Fallout Season 2 for More Cameos or a Bigger Role?
Of course, that leads us to the biggest question of all. Will Ron Perlman’s super mutant creature return to Fallout season two for more cameos, or even a meatier part? He did promise a war was coming after. So we guess he just might. For now, it’s too soon to tell. But there are still two episodes of Fallout season two to go.
Fallout is streaming now on Prime Video.
