Some exciting details have surfaced today regarding the development of Disney’s live-action adaptation of Christopher Paolini‘s popular YA book series The Inheritance Cycle. The development process for Eragon is sailing along smoothly, adding three new names to the mix. High Potential showrunner Todd Harthan, Superman & Lois‘ Todd Helbing, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Marc Webb have all been named to the project.
Adapted from Paolini’s fantasy book series The Inheritance Cycle, Eragon opens up a world of mystifying adventure, dragons, and enchantment. The series has been in the works with Disney+ and 20th Television since 2022. Harthan is tag teaming with Paolini to co-create the adaptation. Harthan and Helbing (known for his work on The CW Network) will both serve as showrunners. Also hopping on board is Webb, who will executive produce. Webb, of course, being responsible for directing The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Announced previously, Bert Salke joins to executive produce via his Co-Lab 21 banner.
In Eragon, destiny selects an ordinary teenager to become the first dragon rider in over a hundred years. Forging an unbreakable bond with his dragon, the boy must master ancient magic, embark on a journey of trial and adventure, defeat the mad king, and ultimately restore balance among his world. Eragon is the first book in The Inheritance Cycle series, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time Eragon will see an on-screen adaptation. The book was previously adapted as a feature film in 2006 with Edward Speleers starring as Eragon. Unfortunately, because of low budget and time constraints, the movie isn’t considered very good. It will be interesting to see how Disney’s television series will stack up in comparison.
When Will Disney’s Eragon Series Come Out?
So far, Disney has not announced any casting updates or a release date for Eragon. The most we know as of now is that the series is officially in the works with a cemented creative team. Who will take the reigns as the new chosen one? How will this fantastical world be reimagined in live-action glory? Be sure to check back as we learn more information about the upcoming series.
