Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin of Crime, might be Daredevil’s primary nemesis. However, longtime Marvel Comics fans know that he actually began as a Spider-Man villain first. With Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance as Kingpin across several seasons of Daredevil and now Daredevil: Born Again, ranking among the MCU’s best bad guys, fans have been wondering whether Fisk would ever battle Spider-Man. Sadly, this does not seem to be the case. According to an interview on the Bingeworthy podcast (via Deadline), D’Onofrio confirms Kingpin won’t appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Here’s what he had to say when asked about his possibly appearing on the big screen:
No. I think I’ll just wait until they have the rights to my character and they put me in one of those movies, and then I’ll figure it all out.
We are not exactly sure what the rights issues are surrounding the character of Kingpin. The Spider-Man films certainly have the right to use the character in animation. After all, he appeared in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. We can only think that Marvel has the live-action rights to Kingpin, thanks to his status in the Daredevil franchise. But isn’t Marvel Studios co-producing Spider-Man: Brand New Day with Sony? Since that’s the case, we can’t imagine what the holdup is with Kingpin making an appearance. Clearly, D’Onofrio knows something that we don’t.
We have a feeling this is actually less of a rights issue that can’t be untangled, and more of an issue with Brand New Day being an overcrowded movie. Not only does it feature the Punisher and the Hulk (and Sadie Sink in a mysterious role), but it also features villains like Scorpion. Where would Fisk even fit in? Having said that, after Mayor Fisk name-dropped Spider-Man (kind of) in Born Again, fans have been itching for a confrontation between these two. But if it happens, it seems we’re just going to have to wait a little longer for it.
