Discord just announced that, starting in March, the platform will introduce “teen-by-default” settings globally. This means all new and existing Discord accounts will automatically be set with teen-friendly security settings, regardless of the user’s actual age.
Among other things, teen-friendly settings mean that sensitive content will be blurred, age-restricted servers and channels will be blocked, and message requests from unknown users will filter to a separate inbox. Users will also receive warning messages when friend requests are sent by people they don’t know, and teen-friendly accounts will not be allowed to speak “on stage” in servers.
In order to unlock all these restrictions, users will need to verify their adulthood via something called “age assurance,” which can be done in one of two ways: taking a video selfie for facial age estimation, or submitting an identity document to Discord’s vendor partners.
On top of this, Discord will be implementing its own “age inference model,” which will run in the background and analyze a user’s activity to “help determine whether an account belongs to an adult.”
Discord claims that its approach to age assurance is privacy-forward, but it’d be hard to blame anyone who’s skeptical about that claim. According to Discord: recorded video selfies never leave the user’s device, identity documents are deleted after verification, and a user’s age verification status won’t be visible to others.
