We’ve only had a handful of images from Prime Video’s Spider-Noir series thus far, giving us a mere glimpse into this alt-timeline version of the amazing Spider-Man. One featured our hero in costume, and the other was simply the name of his detective agency on a door. But thanks to Esquire, we now have several new images, which finally reveal Nicolas Cage, sans mask, as Ben Reilly, the gumshoe detective Spider-Man of the 1930s. Of course, Cage originated this role in animation, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The new photos are in both black and white and color, just as the TV series will have the same two options for viewing it.
Nicolas Cage’s lead character is technically not Spider-Man, but instead goes by the name “The Spider,” harkening back to Depression-era pulp heroes like The Shadow. He’s also not Peter Parker, at least not officially. The producers decided that the Peter Parker name evokes adolescence, and since Cage is older, they went with the name of Peter’s genetic clone from the comics, Ben Reilly. According to Cage, much of his performance will be based on Humphrey Bogart, particularly in the noir classic The Maltese Falcon. But showrunner Oren Uziel said that Cage’s character is 70% Bogart, and about 30% Bugs Bunny. Yeah, that sounds very Nic Cage to us. Spider-Noir is Nicolas Cage’s first TV series ever in his long career.
Spider-Verse producer Chris Miller said, “This character’s very different from the Peter Parker from the movies. He’s older and jaded, and not afraid to punch a guy in the face drunkenly.” However, he’s named Ben Reilly for a reason. Miller’s producer and writing partner Phil Lord said, “I have to be coy about the reasons, because you’ll find out. The reason he’s named Ben Reilly is explained. We’ll leave it at that.” In the comics, the name “Ben” is a tribute to Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, with the last name Reilly an homage to Aunt May’s maiden name.

Other classic characters from the pages of Marvel Comics find new life in Spider-Noir. Daily Bugle reporter Robbie Robertson will be a supporting character, played by Lamorne Morris from New Girl. Another is Sinners’ Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a femme fatale based on ’30s Hollywood icon Anna May Wong. Spider-Man fans will instantly recognize that this is an iteration of longtime Spidey villain/ally Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. the Black Cat. The series mob boss villain will be a take on another classic Spidey foe, Silvermane. In Spider-Noir, the great Brenden Gleason will portray him.
Perhaps the most famous Spider-Man villain used in this series will be Flint Marko, the Sandman. Mayfair Witches’ Jack Huston will play him. Karen Rodriguez plays Janet, the private eye’s resourceful Girl Friday-type, who loves comic books. So far, everything we’ve seen here looks like a very fresh take on an iconic property. Here’s hoping they can pull it off.
Spider-Noir will premiere on the MGM+ linear channel in the U.S. and globally on Prime Video this spring.
