James Van Der Beek, best known for his starring roles on Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, has passed away from cancer. He was just 48 years old.
Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, announced her husband’s death on social media. The actor died in the morning of Wednesday, February 11 from stage 3 colorectal cancer. He shared his 2023 diagnosis with fans in 2024.
In her message announcing his death, Kimberly wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
The Connecticut-born Van Der Beek’s onscreen career began in 1993. His breakout role then came in 1998 when he starred as Dawson Leery on the hit WB series Dawson’s Creek. The popular show ran for six seasons and 128 episodes until it ended in 2003. Van Der Beek quickly followed his big TV role with a leading role on the big screen. He played quarterback Jonathan “Mox” Moxon in Varsity Blues. Other notable credits during his career include Mercy, the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back movies, The Rules of Attraction, and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.
Van Der Beek is also survived by his six children.
