OBSESSION Trailer Imagines a Creepy Reality of Dating Sarah Campbell | usagoldmines.com

Dating is hard. Some might go as far to say it’s a nightmare. As a single woman in my early twenties, trust me, I would know. Blumhouse is taking the notion literally. In today’s day and age, it’s so easy to become trapped…obsessed…utterly tormented with the idea of someone—especially with social media hanging around. What if there was a way to just… wish it into existence? It would everything so much easier, right? Thursday, Blumhouse released a creepy teaser expounding on the very idea. Here’s the teaser trailer for Obsession.

Obsession Trailer Shows You Should Be Careful Who You Wish For…

The trailers sets an eerie tone from the jump. A hopeless romantic is desperate for his crush to notice him. He decides to make a wish on a “One Wish Willow” stick in hopes that she will “love him more than anything.” Cracking the stick, he seals their fate. It works, but with terrible consequences. Under a spell of love, Nikki starts to show disturbing, increasingly obsessive behavior. The final shot shows Bear, what seems to be blood splattered across his face, and Nikki eerily creeping out of the shadows as she asks, “Do you still think I’m pretty?”

Directed by Curry Barker, the modern-day horror reminds us that you should always be careful what (and who) you wish for. It’s like 16 Wishes, only this isn’t a cutesy Disney movie. Instead, the Lucky Duck matches crossed paths with the monkey’s paw and had a terrible, cursed baby. Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette star as childhood best friends Bear and Nikki. Blumhouse and Focus Features will produce.

If you’re at all interested in Curry Barker’s earlier work, including the hour-long found-footage horror movie Milk & Serial, you can check out his YouTube.

You would think that magically wishing all of your problems away would render them solved. (Ha!) Quite the contrary. Personally, I think this entire creepy, obsessive nightmare could’ve been avoided with a simple conversation. But I supposed love isn’t always that simple. And so the tragic accounts of dating in the 21st century continue.

Obsession arrives in theaters on May 15.
