The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is accusing a Minnesota man of draining millions of dollars from the government’s coffers.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota says it’s charging Caesar Munir Wilson for orchestrating a multi-million dollar tax refund fraud scheme that ran from 2022 to 2023.
Authorities allege Wilson filed more than $90 million in tax refund claims and conspired with others to submit additional returns.
In total, prosecutors allege that the fraudulent claims shattered $350 million, with the U.S. Treasury Department shelling out over $19 million in undeserved tax refunds.
Wilson allegedly used the ill-gotten funds to buy a $2.6 million house in Prior Lake, invest in cryptocurrency and other ventures and cover his personal lifestyle.
Prosecutors also say Wilson advised a group of sovereign citizens, or individuals who believe they are not subject to government laws, regulations or tax obligations. He allegedly advised the sovereign citizens on matters of taxes and trusts and supplied them with forms and documents for tax filing.
Says United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen,
“Individuals who file false claims for tax refunds and who conspire with others to violate the laws of the United States must be held accountable for their criminal conduct.”
Wilson is being charged with conspiracy to file false claims for tax refunds, filing a false claim for a tax refund, money laundering and bank fraud.
He is currently out on bail pending further proceedings.
