Even if you’re not on board with modern board games, Netflix definitely is. The streaming site acquired the global rights to Settlers of Catan last October. It has plans to develop multiple movies, shows, and video games based on the best-selling series that brought Euro-style board games to America. Now the streamer is ready to bring another hit entry in the medium to the screen. Netflix is developing a live action Ticket to Ride film.
Deadline reports Netflix has purchased the ultimate ticket for Ticket to Ride. It has acquired the global rights to the 2004 game that has spawned a plethora of sequels and iterations. The first step in bringing Asmodee’s train adventure turn-based game to to the screen will come with a movie currently in development. Nerdist alum Ben Mekler and Chris Amick are writing the script. Asmodee’s Darren Kyman, Tannenbaum Company’s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, and Megamix’s Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer will produce. Game author Alan R. Moon is serving as an executive producer.
While no synopsis or plot details are known yet, Deadline says the idea for the film comes from Mel McClelland, VP of the Tannenbaum Company, and McAuley Cahill, VP of Megamix. They developed the concept “from scratch” with Mekler and Amick. Ticket to Ride players know the story could go anywhere, not just through Europe and the United States. Different versions and expansions have brought gamers around the globe. They have even brought them through time.
Of course, because we’re nerds who have been onboard with modern board games since before streaming existed, we’re also okay if the movie just features some people on a train playing Ticket to Ride. Sure, that might not sound exciting. But can you imagine? We can. We have. In fact, considering Netflix might also develop reality shows based on the game, we’re okay with them taking that idea out for a spin.
