Media and tech giant Comcast is preparing to pay more than $100 million to settle a series of lawsuits over a massive data breach.
The breach happened back in 2023, when “unauthorized third parties” accessed Comcast’s internal network.
In total, 31.6 million customers are affected, with usernames and passwords, names, contact information, dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers at risk.
Now, a federal judge in Pennsylvania has granted preliminary approval to a class action settlement and scheduled a final approval hearing for July 7th.
Affected current and former customers can either receive free financial, credit monitoring and identity theft protection and a reimbursement of up to $10,000 for out-of-pocket losses, or they can receive a cash payment of $50.
Comcast has released a statement on the settlement, which consolidates and resolves 24 cases related to the breach.
“Though we disagree with the claims, this settlement reflects our commitment to resolving this matter efficiently while continuing to prioritize the security and privacy of our customers.”
