My favorite line in horror movie history comes from Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. “Sometimes dead is better.” But while director Lee Cronin isn’t giving us another version of that infamous nightmare—he’s instead retelling a different legendary story—the new trailer for his next film certainly reminds me why I love that quote. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is a truly horrifying original take on a classic monster. Because forget an ancient terror wrapped in bandages. The mummy haunting this family is their own missing daughter who is “alive” in name only.
…..Oh hell yeah. I was skeptical about a new mummy movie considering I’ve never exactly found mummies all that scary. But this is creepy, unsettling, and wildly creative. Maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised Cronin came up with a new way to tell an old tale, though. He found success doing exactly that with another beloved horror franchise. He directed the excellent 2023 film Evil Dead Rise. As for his latest modern adaptation, here’s the official synopsis from Warner Bros.:
The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace— eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.
The film’s tagline is far more succinct and also far more awful (complimentary): “For dust you are.”
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón. James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville serve as producers. It arrives in North American theaters and IMAX on April 17, 2026, two days after it premieres globally.
Even with a two-day head start I know something the rest of the world will be reminded of when they see this film: sometimes dead is better.
