Two kinds of people exist: Folks who let unread messages pile up, and those who stress about uncleared notifications. I live in that second camp, so when Slack recently glitched on me, I went a whole week haunted by a notification dot that would not clear on its own. Turns out though, it takes one second and two keypresses to squash that problem.
The fix: SHIFT + ESC
Why the issue? Such knowledge remains out of reach, given that online searches show other people encountering this problem over many months, with no obvious trigger. My troubles began after a small UI change.
The red dot at least only appears now when it ought to; I no longer mildly panic during the day about having missed an important message. My main regret is not looking up this fix right away.
