Welcome back, Straw Hat Nakama! The long-awaited second season of the Netflix live-action series, One Piece: Into the Grand Line, is finally here, and we’re pleased to say it is bigger, better, and more ambitious in almost every way than its freshman voyage. To help you prepare for your voyage, we’re excited to offer you this spoiler-free review of One Piece season two.

Picking up where the first season of One Piece left off, season two of the show continues the adventures of the Straw Hat pirates as they make their way into the titular Grand Line. In the Grand Line, fans are introduced to a wealth of new characters to supplement the cast and visit a host of new exciting locations. Most notably, Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday, and Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday steal the show in One Piece‘s second chapter–but the season is jam-packed with standout additions to the ever-expanding ensemble; each of them adds to the fray without the show ever feeling like it’s hitting capacity.

Like the first season, One Piece: Into the Grand Line does feel a bit compartmentalized at times, given the island-hopping nature of the series’ early arcs. However, this season sees the narrative begin to develop a clearer throughline as the seeds of the Alabasta Saga’s larger story are planted and soon take shape. This primarily comes courtesy of the One Piece season two’s overarching antagonists, the deadly agents of the shadowy criminal organization known as Baroque Works.

The first season attempted to find a similar narrative foil by expanding Arlong’s character beyond his role in the One Piece source material, but it works much more successfully here, given Baroque Works was already written to function in such a way from the get-go. Toei Animation/NetflixThat said, one of the best parts of the live-action series has been how author Eichiro Oda has used the show to expand and remix the early days of his story. By infusing new knowledge and years of additional lore and worldbuilding, the live-action series gives these fledgling arcs more consistency within the modern scope of One Piece. And Into the Grand Line uses this to its advantage in even better and more significant ways than season one. Most notably, One Piece season two includes events that have been retroactively given more expansive context and meaning in relation to characters introduced hundreds of chapters later in the source material. This season, the live-action One Piece series boldly ditches the ambiguity and wait time by integrating such characters into the narrative as it is unfolding. This results in multiple surprise cameos in One Piece season two, sure to excite and reward longtime fans of the series.Additionally, one of the biggest jumps in the show’s ambition this season is easily the special effects, both in volume and quality. While One Piece season one mostly had to contend with Luffy’s Gum-Gum fruit powers, season two features a significantly wider range of Devil Fruit users; all with unique and fantastical abilities, and all presenting challenges for adaptation to live action. Fortunately, they all look fantastic! NetflixMiss All Sunday’s Flower-Flower fruit and Captain Smoker’s Smoke-Smoke fruit in particular are standouts, but this season does an amazing job of showcasing the versatile potential of the One Piece world. Notably, Smoker’s fruit also serves as the live-action series’ first logia-type power (wherein the user’s body can take on the quality of an elemental form), and the incredible effects displayed bode well for the arrival of key characters in One Piece season 3. If you know, you know. NetflixEven beyond Devil Fruits, Into the Grand Line saw an assortment of visual effects challenges that spectacularly upped the ante from season one. Laboon the whale, monstrous dinosaurs, and the Giant Warrior Pirates of Elbaph, Dorry and Brogy, all make appearances in these handful of episodes. And like the Devil Fruit characters, they all work wonderfully. Of course, this all pales in comparison to the most anticipated addition of the season––fan favorite character, Tony Tony Chopper. Obviously, much of the love, attention, and special effects budget went into bringing this beloved blue-nosed reindeer to life in One Piece season two. And you can feel every bit of it on screen. Mikaela Hoover’s performance comes through beautifully in not only her voice, but in the facial capture and animation of the character. The way in which Chopper’s inclusion feels just as natural and emotionally powerful as the rest of the cast is a testament to the visual effects artists’ and Mikaela Hoover’s talent. It’s truly the highlight of Into the Grand Line.NetflixThat said, Chopper only appears in the final few episodes, so it will be interesting to see how live-action One Piece will maintain that quality moving forward as the character’s role becomes more prominent (and presumably more challenging to bring to life). But if the quality of One Piece season two’s Chopper is any indication, their special effects team knows how to get the job done. With the first season of live-action One Piece, you could feel the limitations of the budget a bit, and that can be seen in how the series had to rein in some of the more extravagant elements of the East Blue Saga (RIP Richie, Momoo, and Hachi). And it definitely raised concerns about how the series could possibly work moving forward, given that the source material only becomes more ambitious and extravagant as it goes. Thankfully, One Piece season two emphatically puts those concerns to rest with a phenomenal display of what this show is capable of. NetflixIf season one drew audiences in with the power of Oda’s lovable Straw Hat characters, then season two is sure to wow them with the epic scope and possibility of One Piece’s world and storytelling. And with the promise of Into the Grand Line’s final moments, it’s safe to say things are only looking up for this epic adventure.
