In the first season of the One Piece live-action series, Nami was the only lady aboard the Going Merry. But now a second gal is joining the crew of the Straw Hat pirates, Nefertari Vivi. Though Vivi begins life posing as a Baroque Works officer, Miss Wednesday, it quickly transpires that she is the missing princess of Alabasta, on a mission to help save her nation. After revealing her identity to the Straw Hat pirates, Vivi comes aboard the ship as a full member of the crew and a welcome friend to Nami. One Piece season two’s Charithra Chandran, who plays Vivi, spoke with Nerdist about this important relationship and how it’s supportive but NOT sisterly. That’s music to my queer ears.

Chandran reveals about Vivi and Nami’s relationship on One Piece season two, “I think it is that female camaraderie. And we always talk about girls’ bathrooms and how women hype each other up in bathrooms and bars and clubs and stuff. And I really think, especially Nami to Vivi, that happens.”
And that’s something that happened between Nami and Vivi’s actresses in the reality of making One Piece season two. Chandran notes, “I think Emily [Rudd] does that for me in real life too, another mirroring. She is the ultimate hype woman. And I think it’s like older sister to younger sister.”

But here, Chandran pauses to draw some important distinctions, that’s Emily Rudd and Charithra Chandran. For Nami and Vivi, she’d like to withdraw the sisterly comparisons. “I think there’s an element of Miss Wednesday and Nami, which is like a little sexy.” And we have to agree with that as well. The NamiVivi, as the ship is succinctly called, elements leaped out to as well when we were watching season two of One Piece. And there just isn’t enough casual sexual tension between woman on our screens. So we approve this withdrawal of the sibling comparison. It’s honestly refreshing because so many times “brotherly” is bandied about when trying to avoid feeding into a fandom’s ship excitement.

Chandran concludes with a grin, “I’m going to say ‘cares for.’ Nami takes care of Vivi.”
Sounds good to us. Consider us all aboard the NamiVivi ship, whether it’s platonic, sexy, or both. Charithra Chandran’s turn as Miss Wednesday/Nefertari Vivi on One Piece season two is now available to stream on Netflix. You can also read our full interview with Chandran here. Rotem Rusak is the Editor-in-Chief of Nerdist. She didn’t ship NamiVivi before… But she sure does now.
