The biggest names in science fiction, fantasy, and horror came together to celebrate the 53rd Annual Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on March 8. Of course, those are three genres we dig here at Nerdist, so we had to tag along for the inside scoop. The night celebrated accolade after accolade, including a spotlight for 60 years of Star Trek and 40 years of Aliens. It was also a big night for IT: Welcome to Derry, which took home the Saturn for Best Horror Television Series. Following their win, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the show’s co-creators, tease that not only is season two of IT: Welcome to Derry in the works, but it will be even greater than the first.
At the press conference for this year’s Saturn Awards, Andy Muschietti confirms that season two of Welcome to Derry is officially in the works. Responding to a question asking what’s happening with the newest installment, Muschietti notes that they plan to make it greater.
“There’s not much we can say but yes,” said Muschietti. “We’re very proud that the expectations are high after the first season. I think we’re going to deliver something that is greater.”
This exciting update follows shortly after Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Casey Bloys assured us that the popular horror series was “not in limbo” and that he “would happily do it” as soon as Andy and Barbara settle on an idea. Still, HBO has yet to officially renew Welcome to Derry for season two. Jason Fuchs stands alongside the Muschiettis as producer and showrunner.
On top of picking up the win for Best Horror Television Series at the Saturn Awards, Welcome to Derry also earned nominations for Best Guest Starring Role on Television (James Remar and Bill Skarsgård) and Best Young Performer in a Television Series (Arian Cartaya and Clara Stack).
Although the Pennywise-starring series hasn’t been officially greenlit for season two, its positive reception speaks for itself. If previous interviews are to be believed, the next installment will follow Pennywise’s 1935 cycle with the Bradley Gang massacre. We look forward to it being bigger, better, and bloodier, just as Andy teased at the Saturns.
