After swallowing a tough loss for Marty Supreme at the 2026 Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, Timothée Chalamet is pivoting forward to his next major project—one where he returns to the sweeping sands of Arrakis. He’s swapping out his ping pong paddle for something a bit sharper. On his Instagram story, Chalamet shares an exciting first look image of his character, Paul Atreides, in Dune: Part Three.
Those who follow Chalamet on Instagram caught a glimpse of what’s to come as Dune: Part Three lands in cinemas later this year. Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, the saga’s main protagonist. In the Dune: Part Three first-look image, Atreides’ face is shrouded by a black mask, revealing just his eyes. Peeking out from behind the mask of his stillsuit are scars around his eyes, possibly signifying his growing powers. This look is drastically different from how we last saw the character, causing quite the stir amongst the Dune-heads out there.
Chalamet has been the talk of the town as of late, and not just for his role as Marty Mauser in Josh Safdie’s ping pong flick. The actor has also had some heat on him for a controversial statement dismissing ballet and opera. But this exciting first look image of Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three, may just be enough to get everyone to forgive him.
What we know about Dune: Part Three so far:
Director Denis Villeneuve has said that Dune: Part Three will take place roughly 12 years after the end of Part Two and be completely different from the first two films. It will adapt the novel Dune: Messiah by Frank Herbert. News broke in November that Robert Pattinson will be joining the already star-studded cast as the major villain Scytale. The official synopsis for Dune: Part Three is as follows:
Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known—and feared—as the man christened Muad’Dib. As Emperor of the known universe, he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield. Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremen, Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throne—and a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence.
And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family’s dynasty…
As we see in this Dune: Part Three first-look image, Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides. He’s joined by Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister Alia. Jason Momoa and Rebecca Ferguson will also reprise their respective roles.
This sneak peek is the first glimpse we’ve seen of the return of Denis Villeneuve’s epic three-part saga. We’re just about ready to saddle up on a Sandworm ourselves. As of now, Dune: Part Three is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, the same day as Avengers: Doomsday. Dunesday, if you will. It’s unclear if either major film will bump its release date or if we’ll get a repeat of Barbenheimer. If the latter is true, it’s a double feature we’re more than excited for. Hey, this Dune: Part Three first-look image does have us feeling excited.
