Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Why BUFFY Reboot Is Cancelled (And It’s Infuriating) Tai Gooden | usagoldmines.com

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans are rightfully upset at Hulu. The streaming service was bringing a Buffy reboot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale to its platform. Sarah Michelle Gellar was thrilled to return to this universe and guide a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. And Chloé Zhao directed the show’s pilot when it went into production last summer. Now, Hulu has slayed the Buffy reboot before it could even see the light of day, a cancellation that’s rocked the fandom and cast alike.

BUFFY Reboot Is Canceled, Not Happening at Hulu

It happened at perhaps the worst time for Gellar and Zhao, who were at SXSW and Oscars celebrations, respectively. Gellar was celebrating her role in Ready or Not: Here I Come while Zhao’s Hamnet was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. After years of crafting an idea that brought them joy and made the fans buzz with delight, a phone call killed that dream.

“For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is… That says something,” she said in an exclusive interview with People

Gellar delivered the sad news via her Instagram page but didn’t get into specific details initially. However, she’s since followed up with more information in that same interview, and the reason why Hulu cancelled the Buffy reboot is infuriating and sad.

“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” Gellar revealed. “That’s very hard when you’re taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn’t watch it.”

Armstrong also took to social media to share her thoughts about the cancellation.

It’s not clear if the pilot can be shopped elsewhere or picked up by another streamer. Hulu and Searchlight, the company behind the reboot, are all under the Disney umbrella and Disney supposedly owns the IP for Buffy. That’s not a good thing for them if they want to take their ideas and talents elsewhere.

And it is both unsurprising and frustrating that the opinion of one (presumably heterosexual and white) man was enough to sink the reboot of a series that literally wasn’t targeted to him in the first place. Buffy will always and forever rule and we hope to see Sarah Michelle Gellar slay the undead again one day.
