Adapting Green Lantern from comics to live action has long since been a challenge. Many of us still have nightmares about the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Even Reynolds, himself, makes fun of it. When it was announced that HBO’s Lanterns would take a more grounded approach to the DC hero, our interest was piqued. However, when the trailer dropped, it was a bit disappointing. Namely because, for a show about the “Green” Lantern, there wasn’t much green in it at all. This resurfaced a comment Damon Lindelof made on a podcast a year ago that “green was stupid,” igniting a controversy within the fandom. The show’s co-creator has now apologized on Instagram for his statement.
Lanterns is co-run by Lindelof and James Gunn. A year ago, Lindelof appeared on an episode of the Lovett or Leave It podcast. When asked about the show, he joked that “it’s called Lanterns, because we all agreed that the ‘Green’ was stupid, so now it’s just Lanterns.” This didn’t sit well with members of the Green Lantern fandom community. When the teaser trailer for the show also revealed a concerning lack of the color green, fans were fearful that it wouldn’t be faithful to the source material.
With the controversial statement resurfacing a year later, legendary Green Lantern comic book writer Grant Morrison weighed in on Sunday, March 15.
“TV writer/producer Damon Lindelof’s comments notwithstanding, the ‘Green’ in ‘Green Lantern(s)’ is not ‘stupid.’ Why does a writer attach himself to this kind of narrative if he thinks it’s fundamentally ‘stupid’? … What is this jockish dismissal of superhero conventions intended to prove anyway? … The only people who give a f**k about the Lanterns TV series are Green Lantern fans. Why alienate them at the start? That feels more like ‘stupid,’ Morrison wrote on Substack.

Lindelof issued a heartfelt apology on Instagram a couple of days later on March 17.
“I have upset Grant Morrison, which means I have now pissed off MOST of the brilliant British/Scottish comics writers that I grew up idolizing,” he said.
“I made a dumb joke on a comedy podcast. I’m not going to bob and weave about context. The joke was dumb, the fandom is not. I owe them an explanation and a genuine reflection of my actual feelings.”
As it turns out, Lindelof is actually a huge fan of green. We’ll see green in the show. Or, at least we hope so. Lanterns comes out in August.
