And that inspiration was not just the cape, but also the boots, underwear on the outside, etc. Capes really worked for characters who fly, as they create a sense of motion on the page. For characters like Batman who don’t fly, there are practical reasons, like creating a bulletproof and fireproof shield. There are the other kinds of heroes who wear capes, and they largely fall into two categories: royal and magical. And their capes have its own history.
Capes have been symbols of royal station since medieval times. And which famous comic book characters often wear capes? Royalty like Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Doom, and sometimes Wonder Woman. And capes have also been symbols of wizardry and magicians for centuries. That is why Doctor Strange, Doctor Fate, the Scarlet Witch, Zatanna, and almost every magic user wear one. Although more superheroes don’t wear capes than do, they’ll always be associated with them. Also, as the video points out, capes are just cool and dramatic.
