Argentina President Javier Milei exchanged seven phone calls with a LIBRA crypto promoter before the token collapsed, The New York Times reported. Investigators confirmed the calls occurred the same night Milei posted about LIBRA on X in 2025. Federal authorities now list Milei as a person of interest while they continue the probe.

Argentina Probe Reviews Milei LIBRA Ties

Phone logs show seven calls between Milei and crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli on the launch night. The New York Times cited records obtained by Argentine investigators. However, investigators have not disclosed the content of those conversations.

Milei has denied wrongdoing and has rejected claims of improper conduct. Still, federal prosecutors continue to examine his role in the LIBRA token promotion. The investigation names him as a person of interest but has not filed charges.

More than a year earlier, Milei promoted LIBRA through posts on X. Soon after, the token’s market cap exceeded $4 billion. However, the price later fell by more than 90%.

Blockchain data showed that eight wallets linked to the project withdrew $107 million. Authorities have reviewed those transactions as part of the inquiry. Milei later deleted his posts about LIBRA.

LIBRA Token Collapse and Political Fallout

In November, an Argentine congressional committee reviewed the LIBRA project. The committee stated that Milei provided “essential collaboration” for the token initiative. It then urged Congress to evaluate his actions.

Meanwhile, investigative outlet El Destape published a report in March. The outlet cited a document recovered from Novelli’s phone. The document outlined an alleged $5 million payment agreement tied to Milei’s promotion.

El Destape also reported that forensic records showed coordinated communications around the token launch. According to those records, Novelli’s devices engaged in multiple calls that night. The logs indicated that Milei and Novelli exchanged several calls before and after the post.

Last June, Argentina’s Anti-Corruption Office reviewed Milei’s conduct. The office cleared him of violating public ethics laws. It concluded that his post about LIBRA was personal and not official.

However, scrutiny continued at the judicial level. A judge ordered the unsealing of bank records belonging to Milei and his sister. Days later, Milei’s government disbanded an investigative task force examining the scandal.

The New York Times published its report on Monday. The paper stated that investigators confirmed the seven phone calls. The federal investigation into Milei’s connection to LIBRA remains ongoing.
