When you’re hot, you’re hot. Last year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines was a surprise hit for director duo Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, after only helming indie horror and TV projects prior. The movie’s success led to the pair lining up a Venom animated film for Sony. The studio seems to be pretty happy with them and have now given them the reins to a film adaptation of video game franchise Metal Gear Solid. From The Hollywood Reporter, Stein and Lipovsky, as part of their overall deal with Sony, will direct MGS with Avi Arad and Ari Arad as producers.
The Metal Gear Solid series of video games—stealth and spy games with increasingly weird sci-fi elements—began as the brainchild of Hideo Kojima. Kojima has made no secret over the years of his desire to make games more like movies. However, rights holder, studio Konami, parted ways with Kojima a number of years back. Ergo, it’s highly unlikely Kojima will have any kind of direct influence on the movie.
Still, the directors heaped praise on Kojima in their statement about their hiring. “Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”
Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch released the following statement about Lipovsky and Stein:
“Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today. With projects across all the company’s film labels, we are so happy to create a home for them, and proud to have them as part of the Sony family.”
We’ll see what becomes of the project as time goes on, but get used to saying “Lipovsky and Stein” for a while.
